St. John’s Welcomes No. 18/19 Creighton to Carnesecca Arena on Saturday

The Red Storm will for look its third-straight win when the Bluejays come to Queens; Tip-off slated for 7:30 p.m. on FS1
QUEENS, N.Y. – After erasing a double-digit second half deficit and eventually knocking off DePaul in double overtime on Tuesday in Chicago, the St. John's men's basketball team will look for its third-straight victory on Saturday against No. 18/19 Creighton. FS1 will carry the national telecast from Carnesecca Arena at 7:30 p.m. with Tim Brando and Vin Parise on the call.
An audio broadcast of the game on the LEARFIELD Red Storm Sports Network with John Minko and Brandon Tierney will also be available on a variety of platforms including the Varsity Network App, TuneIn Radio, RedStormSports.com and the St. John's Red Storm mobile app. St. John's radio broadcast can also be heard on SiriusXM channel 134 or 201 and channel 964 on the SiriusXM app.
On Saturday, St. John's will celebrate Black History month during its contest with Creighton. As part of the BIG EAST's partnership with the Black Fives Foundation, whose mission is to research, preserve, showcase, teach and honor the pre-NBA history of African Americans in basketball, the Red Storm and Bluejays will pay tribute to Black Fives squads from 1904 to the 1950s by wearing shooting shirts for teams from that era. St. John's will wear St. Christopher Club and Creighton will wear Cudahy Rex. Black Fives teams flourished on the amateur, semi-professional and professional levels in cities with substantial African American populations.
The first 2,500 fans at Carnesecca Arena on Saturday will also receive the latest St. John's Basketball Legends Series Bobblehead courtesy of Coca Cola. St. John's Athletics Hall of Famer Bill Schaeffer will be honored as this year's bobblehead. Schaeffer, who currently serves as the Director of Development for the Peter J. Tobin College of Business, scored 1,484 points in 79 career appearances from 1970-73. As a senior during the 1972-73 season, Schaeffer averaged 24.7 points per game, a program record that still stands today.
Since beginning St. John's Basketball Legends Series Bobblehead giveaway games in 2009, the Johnnies have gone a perfect 13-0 in those contests. Two of the victories came against ranked opponents, including the March 1, 2020, matchup against No. 10/9 Creighton, 91-71, on Mike Anderson Bobblehead Night and versus No. 13/13 Butler, 76-73, for Jack Kaiser Bobblehead Night on Dec. 29, 2016.
St. John's will look to carry momentum from its 13-point come from behind victory at DePaul into Saturday's matchup with the Bluejays. Dylan Addae-Wusu shined for the Red Storm, scoring 11 of the team's final 15 points of regulation, including a late 3-pointer to tie the game at 79 forcing overtime. In the extra sessions, the Bronx native rattled off six more points, totaling 17 of his career-high 24 points during the final 14:18 of action. Addae-Wusu also chipped in 11 boards for his second career double-double.
Red Storm senior center Joel Soriano registered his Division I leading 21st double-double, registering 21 points and 16 rebounds in the win over the Blue Demons. Entering Saturday, the Yonkers native is seven rebounds shy of becoming the 46th player in program history to register 500 boards. Soriano also looks to become just the ninth Johnnie to pull down 500 rebounds in his first two seasons in Queens.
St. John's enters its final game of the season at Carnesecca Arena with an 11-4 mark at home, including a 9-3 record in Queens. The Johnnies will try for their third win against a ranked opponent this season, having already downed No. 6/7 UConn, 85-74, at XL Center on Jan. 15 and No. 20/17 Providence, 73-68, at The Garden on Feb. 11.
The Red Storm aims to snap a five-game slide against Creighton on Saturday and record its first victory in the series since knocking off the Bluejays in Queens on March 1, 2020.
Creighton (17-9, 11-4 BIG EAST) enters Saturday's matchup looking to bounce back after having its eight-game win streak snapped on Tuesday, falling 94-86 in double overtime at Providence. All five Bluejays' starters registered double figures, including a team-high 21 points by Ryan Nembhard. The 6-foot guard from Ontario, Canada, also grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds in the setback.
The Bluejays own a 5-8 record away from home this season, including a 3-4 mark in BIG EAST road games. Creighton is averaging 71.7 points and shooting 32.5 percent from 3-point territory on the road in league play.
After Saturday's matchup with Creighton, the Johnnies head to Georgetown for a Wednesday night showdown in Washington, D.C. CBS Sports Network will carry the national broadcast at 9 p.m. inside Capital One Arena.
