St. John’s Drops Road Contest to Marquette

Jillian Archer finishes with 10 points and seven boards
MILWAUKEE— The St. John's women's basketball team dropped its road contest to Marquette on Saturday afternoon, 61-38.
Jillian Archer registered 10 points and seven rebounds in Milwaukee. Over her last four appearances, the graduate student forward is averaging 9.0 points and 8.8 boards.
Jayla Everett finished in double-figures in scoring for the 22nd time this season. The shooting guard added 10 points and four rebounds.
Rayven Peeples pulled down a team-high eight rebounds marking the 16th time in 26 games that the forward has posted eight boards or more.
Jordan King spearheaded the Golden Eagles' effort today, finishing the contest with a game-high 24 points and adding six rebounds and six assists. Chloe Marotta finished with a double-double (14 points and 12 rebounds) and registered her 1,000thcareer point during the contest.
The Red Storm shot over 80 percent from the charity stripe for the fourth consecutive game, going 9-for-11 (81.8 percent) from the free-throw line on Saturday.
St. John's (19-7, 10-7 BIG EAST) started slow offensively in the opening frame and Marquette capitalized, jumping out a 19-6 lead at the end of the quarter.
In the second quarter, Everett registered her first made field goal of the day, as she buried a second-chance 3-pointer off a pass to the top of the key from Bailey.
A high-arcing floater traffic from Danielle Patterson sparked an 8-2 scoring stretch to end the half the Red Storm. The defense recorded four steals during the run that allowed it to climb back into the game, including a fastbreak lay-in from Unique Drake to cut the deficit to single-digits at the half, 29-21.
In the third quarter, Marquette (18-8, 11-6 BIG EAST) opened up on a 14-1 run and never looked back, stretching its advantage to as much as 21, 43-22, after a Rose Nkumu hit a triple.
In the final stanza, Marquette continued to hold its sizeable advantage, outscoring the Red Storm, 14-8, in the final 10 minutes.
Freshman Skye Owen completed an old-fashioned 3-point play in the final two minutes for the Johnnies final basket of the afternoon.
The Red Storm will return to the hardwood on Tuesday night to face No. 6/6 UConn. Tip-off from the XL Center is slated for 7 p.m. and the game will air on SNY.
