Zamudio pitches a two-hit shutout, and Mallah hits first round-tripper of the season
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (Feb. 24, 2023) – The St. John's softball team downed George Washington, 11-0, in five innings on the first day of the Cavalier Classic at Palmer Field.
Carolina Zamudio pitched another gem for the Red Storm (2-8), limiting the Colonials to just two hits in five frames of work. The Mexico City native struck out four and walked one while allowing just three Colonials to reach base in her second complete game shutout of the season.
The Johnnies offense broke out against GW, scoring a run in each inning. Amy Mallah crushed her first home run of the season, a two-run shot over the right-field fence to plate the fourth and fifth runs of the ballgame.
The Red Storm struck first in the opening half-inning when both Jess Bianco and London Jarrard reached base to lead off the game for the Johnnies. A pair of walks scored Bianco for the first run of the contest.
After Zamudio stranded the Colonials runner at third in the bottom half of the first inning, the Red Storm added two more runs in the second. Cassidy Stouffer led off the frame with a triple to right field. The next batter, Sydney Totarsky, plated Stouffer on an RBI single up the middle. After a groundout advanced Totarsky to second base, Jarrard belted a double to score Totarsky for the second run of the stanza and to extend the Red Storm advantage, 3-0.
Following a Zamudio 1-2-3 second inning, the Red Storm kept up the offensive attack. After a lead-off single by Anese Thompson, Amy Mallah blasted a 1-2 pitch over the fence in right to increase the Red Storm lead to five runs. The Johnnies were not done yet, loading the bases on a single and two walks. Back-to-back hit by pitches would score two more runs for St. John's and expand the lead to 7-0. The GW reliever was able to end the inning with the bases loaded.
Once again in the fourth inning, the Johnnies scored three runs to make it a 10-0 game. After a pair of walks, and stolen bases, Elanna Lysiak scored on a wild pitch. With two outs, Mallah stole home after a Jess Bianco walk. Jarrard stepped up to the plate next and smoked a single to score Bianco, the 10th run of the game.
Zamudio shut the door on the Colonials, allowing only two base runners in the final three innings.
In the fifth inning, the Red Storm scored one final run. Peyton Cody led off the inning with a pinch-hit double before touching home plate on a wild pitch.
St. John's will continue action in the Cavalier Classic with a pair of games tomorrow. After a change in the schedule due to expected inclement weather, the Red Storm will now play Virginia at 10 a.m. followed by Howard at 12:30 p.m.
