The Red Storm won 10-2 over UMES in five innings, after falling 13-5 to Longwood in six innings
FARMVILLE, Va. (Feb. 25, 2023) – The St. John's softball team split a pair of games on Sunday at Lancer Field. The Red Storm cruised past UMES, 10-2 in five innings in the second game of the day after falling to host, Longwood 13-5 in six frames.
Graduate student Peyton Cody had a great day at the plate, hitting three home runs on the day and driving in seven Johnnies.
Game 1
London Jarrard tallied her multi-hit game of the season with a single, double, walk and RBI in the first game of the day.
The game started off promising for the Red Storm (4-10) in the first inning. Jess Bianco led off the contest with a walk, and scored on a London Jarrard double.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Lancers responded with a pair of runs. The first two Lancers reached base safely and executed a double steal, to set up two runners in scoring position for the third hitter, Kayley Devivi. Devivi slapped a two-RBI single to give the Lancers a 2-1 lead. Carolina Zamudio retired the side to limit the damage.
After the Red Storm were held scoreless in the top half, the Lancers added another run in the bottom of the second. A leadoff single eventually scored Longwood's third run of the day. With two runners on and two outs, Loreley Francia relieved Zamudio in the circle and forced a Lancer to popout on one pitch.
In the third inning, the Johnnies regained the lead. After two consecutive outs to start the inning, Jarrard would create traction on the base paths with a walk. On the very next pitch, Whittaker roped a double to the wall to score Jarrard from first. Cody stepped up to the plate next and belted her second round-tripper of the season, a two-run shot to give the Johnnies a 4-3 lead.
Francia held the Lancers in check in the bottom of the third, before Longwood was able to retake the lead in the fourth inning. A pair of Lancer doubles tied the game at 4, before Lindsey Hay hit a home run to give the Lancers its final lead of the game, 6-4.
The Red Storm chipped into the lead, scoring a run in the fifth frame. Bianco and Jarrard reached base on back-to-back singles, and Whittaker made the bases full of Johnnies by reaching on an error. This set the table for Cody at the plate. Cody drove a ball to the outfield, for a sac fly to score Bianco. Longwood was able to limit the damage, and strand the Johnnies at first and second.
The Lancers added an insurance run on two hits in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 8-5.
After a Johnnies scoreless sixth, the Lancers scored six runs to end the game after six innings on the run rule. With the bases full on Lancers Korynna Anderson belted a grand slam to plate the last four runs of the game, and clinch the game for Longwood.
Game 2
Sydney Totarsky notched four RBIs while going 2-for-2 at the plate and scoring one run. Totarsky, Cody and Thompson were the three Johnnies to notch a two-hit game.
Hannah Mearns earned her first win of the season. The junior struck out four, and walked none in her first complete game of the season. The Binghamton transfer allowed just two runs on six hits.
UMES got on the board in the first inning with a pair of runs. A trio of singles to open the game, scored the Hawks' first run. With runners at the corners, an RBI groundout scored the second run of the ballgame for UMES.
It didn't take long for the Red Storm to respond, tying the game at two in the home half of the first inning. Jarrard singled as the second batter of the inning, and scored on Cody's second homer of the day, to tie the game at 2.
Mearns struck out two batters in the second inning, as both teams went scoreless in the frame.
In the bottom of the third, a pair of walks and a Melanie Santos double brought Sydney Totarsky to the plate with the bases loaded. Totarsky ripped a single to score two Johnnies and give the Red Storm the lead 4-2.
Once again in the fourth inning, the Red Storm offensive attack tacked on two more runs. After Jarrard drew a five-pitch walk, Cody cleared the fence once again with a two-run shot to lengthen the Red Storm lead to 6-2.
In the fifth inning in need of four runs to reach the eight-run rule, all six Johnnies to get to the plate reached base. A double by Anese Thompson and a walk by pinch-hitter set up a potential RBI situation for Totarsky. She took advantage of the opportunity and laced a double into the game to plate both runs. After Casto and pinch-hitter Elanna Lysiak loaded the bases, the final Red Storm pinch-hitter Cassidy Stouffer, drove in two Johnnies on a single to clinch the 10-2 Johnnies victory in five innings.
St. John's will return to Queens with the first 14 games of the season under their belts. The Johnnies will host the Red Storm Classic starting on Friday with games against Drexel and Merrimack.
