Dylan Addae-Wusu and AJ Storr lead Red Storm with 14 points apiece
CINCINNATI, Ohio – The St. John's men's basketball team was tripped up, 96-71, at No. 16/15 Xavier on Saturday inside Cintas Center.
Junior guard Dylan Addae-Wusu and freshman guard AJ Storr led the way for the Red Storm (14-10, 4-9 BIG EAST) with 14 points apiece. Addae-Wusu registered all of his points in the second half, shooting 3-for-5 from distance and making all five attempts at the free-throw line. Storr shot 5-for-12 from the field and knocked down a pair of 3-pointers in the contest.
Xavier (19-5, 11-2 BIG EAST) shot 54.2 percent (32-59 FG) from the field and sank 15 3-pointers on the night. Jack Nunge led five Musketeers in double figures with 21 points, going 7-for-12 from the field with four triples. The 7-foot forward also dished out a team-high six assists.
Musketeers' guard Colby Jones helped Xavier jump out to a 19-point lead, 49-30, by intermission. Jones converted his first five shot attempts and hit three from distance for 13 first-half points. The junior guard finished with 19 points, eight boards and four assists in 29 minutes of work.
Storr scored 12 of his 14 points in the first half, going 4-for-6 from the field in the opening stanza. The Rockford, Ill., native led the Red Storm in scoring for the third time in the last four contests.
The Musketeers controlled the second half, opening the frame on a 17-7 run to go up 67-37 with 14:10 remaining. However, the Johnnies chipped away at the Xavier advantage as Kolby King provided a spark off the bench for St. John's. The freshman guard knocked down a 3-pointer to begin a 28-20 stretch over the next nine minutes that saw the Red Storm cut its deficit to 91-71.
Andre Curbelo also assisted in scoring off the bench in the final 20 minutes, totaling nine of his 13 points shooting 4-for-5 from the field in the stanza. The Illinois transfer also dished out three assists and recorded a team-high three steals in 19 minutes of action.
Xavier sank 15 of its 28 shots from distance (53.6%) on Saturday. The nation's leader in assists per game, Xavier dished out 26 helpers on 32 made field goals.
The Red Storm completes its two-game road trip on Tuesday visiting Hinkle Fieldhouse to take on Butler. FS1 will carry the national broadcast with tip-off slated for 8:30 p.m.
