Yesica de Lucas and Amaya Lopez win two matches on the day
SAN MARCOS, Tex. (March 2, 2023) - The St. John's women's tennis team fell at Texas State, 4-3, on Thursday afternoon at the Bobcat Tennis Center.
In doubles play, the Bobcats took two of the three matches from the Red Storm (6-5). The duo of Yesica de Lucas and Amaya Lopez, competing together for the first time this season, knocked off Jadeh Chan and Andrea Pineda, 6-3. Last week's BIG EAST Doubles Team of the Week, Mouna Bouzgarrou and Lalita Devarakonda, fell in No. 1 doubles to the Bobcats' Kate Malazonia and Mae McCutcheon, 6-2.
De Lucas earned her second victory of the day win a win at No. 2 singles. The Alcala de Henares, Spain native defeated Emily Niers, 7-5, 6-3. Lopez picked up a second win on the day. She needed all three sets to claim the victory against Andrea Pineda, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4. Willa Bay Breunich also notched the third Johnnies singles win, taking down McCutcheon in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5. Devarakonda fell to Kiana Graham at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-1.
St. John's will return to action with a home match against Radford on March 8 at USTA Tennis Center. The Red Storm will close out the weekend with a road match at Yale on Saturday, March 11.
