Red Storm drop tournament game at Mohegan Sun Arena
UNCASVILLE, Conn.— The fourth-seeded St. John's women's basketball team fell to fifth-seeded Marquette, 57-47, in the BIG EAST Tournament Quarterfinal on Saturday afternoon.
The game was closely contested throughout, before a 10-0 Golden Eagles' scoring spurt in the final quarter pushed them to a tournament victory at Mohegan Sun Arena.
Mimi Reid tallied 11 points to lead the team, including seven in the opening quarter. The graduate student point guard
Jillian Archer recorded a career-high five steals, the most by any Red Storm player this season. The forward added five boards, four points and two blocks.
Kadaja Bailey finished in double-figures in scoring with 10 points on the afternoon, marking the 28th time this season the All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention guard has added 10 or more points this season.
Rayven Peeples led the team in rebounding for the 16th time this season. The redshirt senior forward pulled down 10 boards against the Golden Eagles. The forward additionally chipped in six points and two blocks.
St. John's held Marquette to just 1-for-9 (11.1 percent) shooting from beyond-the-arc.
The Golden Eagles were led by Liza Karlen, Chloe Marotta and Jordan King, who combined for 50 of their 57 points. Marotta led all players with 18 points and 14 rebounds.
St. John's got off to a stellar start, courtesy of Reid, who started off the scoring for the Red Storm with a corner triple and scored the team's first seven points. A flashy lay-up from Bailey made it, 9-4.
Marquette then responded with a 12-0 run that spanned into the second quarter but was halted by another bucket from Reid. The Red Storm began to climb back into the contest, Bailey nailed a triple and then made a circus shot as she was falling to the floor to knot the game at 20. With 1:07 left in the half, Archer battled for an offensive rebound and putback a lay-up off the glass to tie it at 24, before a pair of Marquette free-throws gave it a two-point lead heading into the locker room.
The two sides stayed neck-and-neck in the third stanza, as neither team led by more than three points during the entire third quarter. Midway through, Jayla Everett buried a 3-pointer to put the Johnnies back in front. A pair of makes at the charity stripe from Unique Drake gave St. John's a 41-40 lead heading into the final frame.
Peeples got a bucket to go in traffic to make it, 43-42, before the Golden Eagles spurred a 10-0 run in the fourth quarter to give them a cushion. A made jumper from Danielle Patterson cut the deficit to six, but it was too much to overcome as Marquette held on to advance to tomorrow's semifinals.
