COLUMBUS, Ohio- The St. John's women's basketball team will take on Purdue on Thursday night at 7 p.m. in the NCAA Tournament First Four.
After hearing its name called for the first time since 2016, the 11th-seeded Red Storm will meet the Boilermakers in the play-in game at Value City Arena on ESPN2. The winner will advance to take on sixth-seeded North Carolina in the First Round on Saturday on Ohio State's campus.
The contest will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2, with Sam Gore and Kim Adams on the call.
The Johnnies arrive at the Big Dance on the heels of a remarkable turnaround during the 2022-23 campaign. St. John's carries a 22-8 record and finished 13-7 in BIG EAST play, its best conference mark since 2013-14.
The Red Storm own two wins over Associated Press top-15 squads, downing then-No. 13 Creighton and then-No. 4 UConn on the road for its highest ranked win in over a decade.
In his 11th season at the helm, Head Coach Joe Tartamella is leading the Johnnies for the fourth time under his direction. Having spent over 20 years in Queens with different roles on the staff, Tartamella has been apart of eight of the 11 NCAA Tournament appearances, highlighted by St. John's Sweet 16 run in 2012 as the associate head coach. He owns an overall record of 6-7 in the NCAA Tournament during his tenure with the program.
Following a pair of losing seasons, Tartamella righted the ship and led the squad to a 37.6 percent increase in win rate, which ranks ninth-best nationally. For his efforts with a roster that featured three starters who transferred in this past summer, Tartamella was honored as the 2023 BIG EAST Coach of the Year on March 2. A week later, he was named one of just 10 semifinalists for the Naismith National Coach of the Year.
Jayla Everett has led the way for the Johnnies, averaging 15.8 points per game, the highest scoring average by a first-year St. John's player in nearly 30 years. A lights out shooter, Everett ranks 15th nationally and second in the league shooting 42.4 percent from 3-point land. The Pittsburgh transfer has flushed 72 triples this season, which ranks third most in program history.
The Red & White will make their 11th all-time appearance in the NCAA Tournament and first in seven years. The program holds an all-time record of 7-10, dating back to its first appearance in 1983. Over a seven-year stretch from 2010-16, the Red Storm qualified for the event six times and recorded at least one win in four of those appearances.
Purdue heads to the First Four with a 19-10 record and finished 7th in the tumultuous Big Ten conference with a 9-8 mark. The Boilermakers boast a win over the hosts Ohio State. The squad is impressive from the charity stripe, knocking down 77.6 percent from the free-throw line, which ranks atop the conference. Lasha Petree leads the way for Purdue averaging 14.8 points per game.
