St. John’s Edged by Marquette, 72-70, in Overtime in BIG EAST Tournament Quarterfinals

Dylan Addae-Wusu and David Jones led the Red Storm with 16 points apiece
NEW YORK – The St. John's men's basketball team fought top-seeded Marquette (26-6) to the bitter end of its BIG EAST Tournament Quarterfinal matchup, but came up just short falling in overtime, 72-70, on Thursday at Madison Square Garden.
Red Storm junior guard Dylan Addae-Wusu scored 11 of the team's final 14 points of the second half, including the game-tying layup with 4.5 seconds to go in regulation that forced overtime. In the extra session, the Johnnies held close with Marquette, never trailing by more than three, and had a chance to win the game at the buzzer but Posh Alexander's 3-point attempt was off the mark.
BIG EAST Player of the Year Tyler Kolek scored seven of the Golden Eagles 11 points in overtime and finished with a game-high 19 points. Kolek added nine rebounds and six assists to his stat line.
St. John's junior forward David Jones went for 16 points to go with 11 rebounds in 32 minutes off the bench, marking his 12th-straight game in double figures. The Johnnies also had two players record double-doubles for the second-straight game, as senior center Joel Soriano posted 12 points and 12 rebounds for his NCAA-best 25th of the season.
After seeing Marquette take a five-point edge in the first half, the Johnnies went on an 18-2 run, scoring 16 unanswered during the stretch. Jones tallied eight straight points before Kolby King sank his first three shots off the bench, including a pair of triples. O'Mar Stanley capped off the spurt with a layup to put St. John's ahead 27-16 with 6:31 remaining in the half.
The Red Storm clamped down on Marquette defensively during the run, forcing eight-straight misses and the Golden Eagles shot just 1-for-15 from the field over an 8:38 stretch. St. John's also saw its biggest lead of the half on a triple from Storr to jump ahead by 14 points at 3:47 before taking a 36-26 lead into the break.
The Johnnies kept Kolek scoreless through the opening 20 minutes, while holding Marquette to its third-fewest points in a half this season.
The Golden Eagles rushed out of the intermission, going on a 14-2 run through the opening 4:42 of the second stanza to take its first lead since 10:24 of the opening half. The Red Storm countered with a 9-0 run of their own. Soriano muscled through for consecutive three-point plays before Alexander knocked down a 3-pointer in the corner at 12:05 to reclaim a 47-40 lead.
In a game of runs, the Golden Eagles one-upped the Johnnies with a 10-0 response to set up a wild finish to regulation.
Trailing by four with less than seven minutes to play, Addae-Wusu rattled off nine straight points to lift the Red Storm to a 56-55 lead with 2:25 to go.
After Marquette scored five unanswered points, Storr drew a foul from behind the arc and knocked down all three from the line to make it a one-point game, 60-59, with 19 seconds on the clock. On Marquette's next trip down court, Olivier Prosper-Maxence went 1-for-2 from the line, giving Addae-Wusu the opportunity to knot the game at 61 by the end of regulation.
Prosper finished with 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting while Oso Idhogaro posted a 10-point, 11 rebound double-double.
