Men’s Tennis Sweeps No. 7 Marquette, 4-0, to Advance to the Semifinals

The Red Storm will await the winner of Georgetown and Xavier for the 1 p.m. match on Saturday
CAYCE, S.C. (April 21, 2023) – The St. John's men's tennis team swept seventh-seeded Marquette, 4-0, in the BIG EAST Tennis Championships by Jeep against the seventh seed, Marquette on Friday afternoon at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center.
With the win, the second-seeded Johnnies will advance to Saturday's semifinal match awaiting the winner of third-seeded Hoyas of Georgetown and sixth-seeded Musketeers of Xavier.
The Red Storm notched the first point in the match with a pair of doubles wins. In the first court, Diogo Marques and Axel Vila Antuna recorded a 6-4 victory against Stefan Dragovic and Rami Scheetz. The Johnnies clinched the point with its second victory by the duo of Carl Gustafsson and Nishant Dabas. The pair logged a 6-3 victory in the second slot against Blake Roegner and Tim Krstulovic.
In singles play, Marques earned his eighth-straight victory with a 6-4, 6-1 defeat of Stefan Dragovic in the top court. Ryota Kaneda made quick work of Guilherme Da Matta, 6-2, 6-1, in the first singles match to finish. Gustafsson registered his second victory of the day with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Thomas Nelson. The other three singles matches were deemed unfinished.
Earlier in the season, the Johnnies knocked off Georgetown, 5-2 in Queens. In postseason play, the Red Storm are 2-1 against the Hoyas with the most recent meeting going in favor of Georgetown, 4-2.
The Johnnies did not meet Xavier in the regular season slate this season. The two programs have met in the postseason six times, with the Red Storm victorious in all six. St. John's won the most recent match, 4-1 in the quarterfinals in 2021.
