St. John’s to Compete at the BIG EAST Championships

Red Storm will battle for league title at Riverton Pointe Golf Club
HARDEEVILLE, S.C. (April 27, 2023)- The St. John's men's golf team will compete in the BIG EAST Championships presented by JEEP this week from April 28-30 at Riverton Pointe Golf Club in Hardeeville, S.C.
Players will tee-off at 8 a.m. on Friday and Saturday and 8:30 a.m. on the final day of competition. The field consists of 10 teams- Butler, Creighton, DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Seton Hall, St. John's, UConn, Villanova and Xavier.
The team and invidiual winners will both qualify for the 2023 NCAA Golf Championships in Scottsdale, Ariz.
The event will be live streamed throughout on GameKast and live results will be available on GolfStat during the entire tournament.
The Red Storm line-up will feature Peicheng Chen, Jack Simon, Tyler Gerbavsits, Ryan Rittberger and Brendan Smith.
In the Johnnies last time out on April 17-18, the squad finished seventh in a competitive 13-team field at the Mountaineer Invitational in West Virginia.
Chen paces the squad and comes into the tournament with the second-best stroke average amongst the field at 71.8. The sophomore holds two titles this season earning medalist honors at The MacDonald Cup and the Southern Invitational.
Program veterans Gerbavsits and Simon have had a strong 2022-23 campaign. Gerbavsits has logged five top-25 finishes over 10 events and Simon enters in good form, having placed in the top-15 in his last three tournaments.
In last year's conference tournament, the Red Storm finished in sixth out of 10 teams with Seton Hall capturing the team championship. The Johnnies are seeking their first top-five finish since 2016 and their first team title since 2014.
