St. John’s Surges Into Third Place on Moving Day, Simon in First Place

Red Storm shoot 9-under as a squad, Simon remains in first place
HARDEEVILLE, S.C. (April 29, 2023)- The St. John's men's golf team surged up the leaderboard with an outstanding second round at the 2023 BIG EAST Championships presented by JEEP. The Red Storm shot 9-under, 279, at Riverton Pointe Golf Club to jump into third place and two strokes off the lead.
The 9-under team score was the lowest to par the Johnnies have posted in a tournament since round 1 of the UTSA Invitational on Oct. 29, 2007.
Four out of the five Red Storm players shot under par today highlighted by a 4-under, 68, from Jack Simon, who continues his terrific run at the tournament and heads into the final in first place at 7-under par. The graduate student had seven birdies today and is leading the field with 11 through 36 holes.
For the second-straight day, Ryan Rittberger shot 2-under par and played a key role in a pivotal moving day for the Red Storm. The senior sits second overall on the leaderboard at 4-under tied with Butler's Connor McNeely.
Tyler Gerbavsits bounced back in a big way logging a 2-under, 70, in the middle round at Riverton Pointe Golf Club. Peicheng Chen was the fourth and final Johnnie to go under par shooting a 1-under, 71.
Gage Wolfle entered the line-up on Saturday and shot a 3-over, 75, in South Carolina.
St. John's trails the leader's Marquette by two strokes heading into the final round. Defending champions Seton Hall sit in second at 2-under as a squad.
