The senior tied a program-record with 23 saves at Providence
NEW YORK- The St. John's lacrosse goaltender Kyle Munson was named to tbe BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, the conference office announced Monday.
Munson garners the honor after a record-tying performance at Providence on Saturday. The Merrick, N.Y., native made 23 saves, which matches the most in a game since the program was reinstated in 2005. The senior netminder tied former Johnnie Dan Goldberg, who made 23 stops against Drexel on March 10, 2007.
The senior's 23 saves tied for the third-most of any goaltender in NCAA Division I this season.
Munson was terrific all afternoon in his second 20-plus save performance of the year, making stops in crucial moments, including a big one during the overtime period on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.
Additionally, Munson set career-bests in groundballs scooping six and caused turnovers with three.
After transferring in from Drexel, Munson made an instant impact starting 12 games during the 2023 campaign. The goalkeeper recorded 176 saves on the year, just one shy of Jeff Lowman's single-season record since reinstatement. Lowman logged 177 stops during the 2011 season.
The Long Island native ranks 10th in the country and second in the BIG EAST averaging 13.5 saves per contest.
Munson becomes the second Red Storm player to earn an honor roll nod this year, joining teammate Brian Kelly, who was tabbed on Feb. 20.
