Danielo Parkinson Named Arthur Ashe Jr. Sport Scholar of the Year

Four Johnnies recognized for academic and athletic achievement
QUEENS, N.Y. - Four St. John's student-athletes have been named 2023 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sport Scholars withDanielo Parkinson being recognized as the sport scholar of the year for men's lacrosse.
Parkinson is joined by teammate Michael Pisanelli, Angelica Kusnowo of women's golf and volleyball's Mimi Larry as the four Johnnies to earn the prestigious honor presented to student-athletes of color who demonstrated high-levels of achievement in the classroom and on the field of competition.
The award was created in honor of tennis legend Arthur Ashe Jr. and his passion for education and tennis. To qualify a student must be at least a sophomore in academic standing, maintain a 3.5 GPA or higher, excel in athletic competition and demonstrate commitment to leadership in their communities.
Parkinson, a senior short-stick defensive midfielder was the top scholar among Division I men's lacrosse student athletes and holds a GPA of 3.79 in cyber security.
On the lacrosse field, Parkinson missed the majority of the 2023 campaign due to injury. The year prior, the Roosevelt, N.Y., product played in all 14 games scooping 18 groundballs and forcing six turnovers.
Kusnowo a junior on the women's golf team, earns the honor for the second-consecutive year. The Chino Hills, Calif., native appeared in eight events for the Red Storm during the 2022-23 campaign. An excellent student, Kusnowo boasts a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Larry, a long-term member of the volleyball squad appeared in 16 matches during the Johnnies 2022 season. The defensive specialist tallied for digs, three service aces and two assists during the Red Storm's run to the BIG EAST Tournament and the NIVC.
Pisanelli was named a scholar for the second-straight academic year. A four-year member of the lacrosse team, the faceoff specialist appeared in 11 career games while in Queens. The Ipswich, Mass., native will graduate this Sunday with his degree in homeland security.
