The freshman is set to compete in the discus throw on Saturday
QUEENS, N.Y.- After a dominant freshman campaign, Jamora Alves will represent the St. John's track and field team at the NCAA East Region Preliminary in Jacksonville, Fla.
Alves will compete in the discus throw on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. at the Visit Jax Track at Hodges Stadium. The freshman qualified for the first round of the NCAA Championships by logging a toss of 52.84 meters at the Hurricane Collegiate Invitational on March 25. That throw also gave Alves the Grenada national record in the event.
The freshman put together a fantastic debut season in Queens on the way to competing for a national championship. Just two weeks ago, Alves captured two BIG EAST titles in the shot put and discus, respectively, becoming the first Red Storm thrower to win multiple events at the outdoor championships since Sheba George in 2002. For her performance, Alves was honored as the BIG EAST High Point Performer along with fellow Johnnie Tatyana McKenzie, tallying 20 individual points.
Alves will battle against 47 other student-athletes from some of the best schools in the country and will compete in the second flight which features 15 other throwers. The top 12 throws from Saturday will advance to the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas on June 7.
