Whittaker earns her second BIG EAST Honor of the season
QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's softball catcher Katie Whittaker was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll following her efforts this past weekend to help the Red Storm clinch a bid in the BIG EAST Tournament.
The league office announced late Monday afternoon that the freshman had earned her second conference weekly honor of the season. Seven different Johnnies have earned weekly conference recognition, but Whittaker is the first this season to have been selected twice. Whittaker was named freshman of the week, following the first weekend of the season.
Whittaker played a critical role in the clinching game on Sunday as part two of the back-to-back home runs by the Red Storm in the sixth inning. The San Marcos, Calif. native was two-for-two in the first game of the series and scored a pair of runs. She also provided a spark on defense commanding the backstop by catching all three games this weekend.
Against Creighton, the freshman was six-for-eight logging a .750 batting average. She tallied a pair of homers, three RBIs and scored five runs. She compiled a team-best 1.500 slugging percentage and an .846 on-base percentage.
The Red Storm will compete in its 13th BIG EAST Tournament starting this week. The Johnnies earned the fifth seed and will be playing fourth-seeded Butler in the first round on Wednesday at noon. This year the tournament is being held at Burrill Family Field in Storrs, Conn.
