SUMMIT, N.J.– Former St. John's men's golfer Andrew Svoboda punched his ticket to the U.S. Open for the first time in 10 years during Final Qualifying on Monday.
Svoboda, one of the most decorated players in program history, posted a 5-under, 137, over 36 holes at Canoe Brook Country Club. The former Johnnie carded a 4-under,67, in the opening round and followed it up with a 1-under, 70 on the next 18 holes.
After being tied with Christopher Crawford at the conclusion of 36 holes in Summit, N.J., he went to a playoff and birdied the 10th hole to claim one of four spots in regional qualifying.
The Milford, Conn., native will compete against the world's best at the 123rd U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club on June 15-18.
This marks the fifth time Svoboda has qualified for a U.S. Open and the first since 2013. He will join fellow alumnus and St. John's Hall of Famer Keegan Bradley in the 156-golfer field in California.
During his time in Queens where he starred for Head Coach Frank Darby from 1999-2003, Svoboda tallied a program-best 14 individual wins. While with the Red Storm, he won the 2001 BIG EAST title and competed in NCAA Regionals that same year.
