Red Storm move to 3-0-1 on the year after the home victory
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's soccer team logged a 1-0 victory over Penn at Belson Stadium on Thursday night.
Jessica Garziano propelled the Red Storm to victory, tallying a goal in the 35th minute. The graduate student has logged a team-high seven points (2 G's, 3 A's) through the first four matches of the year.
Nicole Gordon recorded the assist on Garziano's goal, playing a beautiful one-touch pass to put the Red Storm in front.
For the fourth straight contest, Red Storm goaltender Maria O' Sullivan recorded a clean sheet. The four straight shutouts marks the most to start a season since 2015, when the Johnnies won the BIG EAST Regular Season title.
The backline allowed the Quakers to just two shots and only one on target. Through four games, St. John's (3-0-1) has conceded just seven shots on frame.
St. John's outshot the visitors, 7-2, on a beautiful night in Queens.
The Red Storm threatened early in the 5th minute, when Lauryn Tran fired one on target across the box that was saved and a tempting rebound fell to Jordyn Levy, but her strike on net was blocked by a Penn (2-1) defender.
Penn's one scoring opportunity came in the 29th minute, as the Quakers' Katerina Peroulas booted a shot that O' Sullivan parried away with an impressive diving save.
Just five minutes later the Johnnies responded, Garziano got the Red Storm on the board, after the ball came free she touched it to Gordon, who played the one-two back to Garziano, who tucked it home into the bottom left corner in the 34th minute.
The Red Storm continued to pressure in the attacking third in the latter half. Its most promising chance came off a headed pass from Garziano, that bounced to Levy right on the Quakers' doorstep but the junior's strike was knocked aside by Penn's Laurence Gladu for a corner in the 65th minute.
The Quakers spent the closing minutes searching for an opportunity in the final third but a tight-sealed Red Storm defense prevented any late scoring chances and held on for a home victory.
St. John's will hit the road for its next game taking on Central Connecticut State on Labor Day at 4 p.m.
