St. John’s Falls to New Mexico 3-0

The Red Storm returns to the court on Saturday at noon
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The St. John's volleyball team fell to New Mexico in straight sets, 3-0 on Friday night.
The scores of the match were 16-25, 19-25 and 19-25.
Giorgia Walther led the Red Storm with 12 kills, while also contributing four digs and two blocks. Erin Jones paced the team in digs with six, while adding seven kills and an ace. Magda Stambrowska put up eight kills for the Johnnies.
Wiktoria Kowalczyk recorded a team-leading 30 assists, 12 of which came in the third set. Kowalczyk has recorded 30 or more assists in three of St. John's matches to start the season.
Two Lobos, Kaitlynn Biassou and Uxue Guereca, finished the day with double-digit kills compiling 13 and 14 respectively. Melissa Walden set her way to 30 helpers in the victory.
Walther and Jones paced the Johnnies in the first set, combining for eight of the team's 12 kills. The Lobos opened up the first frame taking a commanding 15-8 lead over the Johnnies and never looked back. St. John's scored four straight points off a mix of New Mexico errors and Walther and Jones kills, cutting their deficit down to six, 21-15. A 4-1 Lobos run put the set away for New Mexico, 25-16.
The Johnnies got out to an early 8-4 lead at the beginning of a contested second frame. The Lobos answered immediately putting together a 6-2 stretch of their own, tying the game at 10-all. Tied up at 14 a piece, New Mexico put together an 8-5 run to take a late 22-19 lead and cruise to a 25-19 second set victory.
Walther slammed five kills, hitting at a 44.4 percent clip in the third frame. Much like the first set, the Lobos rolled out to an early 8-5 lead to start the third game that they never conceded. The Johnnies made things interesting midway through the set, going on a 5-3 run, cutting New Mexico's lead down to four, 20-16. The Lobos used their sizable lead to put away the Johnnies, capping their 25-19 victory off with an Elizabeth Woods kill.
St. John's will close out the Lobo Invitational tomorrow when they take on CSU Bakersfield at noon.
