St. John’s Takes Five Set Thriller Against CSU Bakersfield

Rashanny Solano Smith and Erin Jones named to the Lobo Invitational All-Tournament team
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The St. John's volleyball team closed out the Lobo Invitational taking down CSU Bakersfield in five sets, 3-2 on Saturday afternoon.
Both squads exchanged sets until the Red Storm took the fifth frame, winning the match. The scores of the sets were 25-22, 23-25, 25-19, 20-25 and 16-14.
"Our squad showed guts and resilience today and it was a fantastic team win without two of our perennial starters," said Head Coach Joanne Persico. "They have been the epitome of road warriors these last two weekends and I could not be more proud of them."
Rashanny Solano Smith and Erin Jones were named to the Lobo Invitational All-Tournament Team. Solano Smith led the Johnnies in digs across the invitational and recorded a team-high 15 against Bakersfield. Jones did it all for the Johnnies, registering a double-double consisting of 16 kills and 10 digs to go along with an ace.
Giorgia Walther set a new career high in kills with 28 against the Roadrunners. Walther recorded her third double-double of the season, racking up 11 digs and two aces to compliment her 28 kills.
Ludovica Zola tied her career-high in kills with six in the victory.
Magda Stambrowska added a season-high 11 kills to the Johnnies total of 69.
Wiktoria Kowalczyk continued to be a dominant force in the Red Storm offense, contributing a season-high 57 assists, to go along with five kills, seven digs and one ace.
The Roadrunners had two players record double-digit kills. Breklyn Pulling added 13 while Sophia Bertotti Metoyer had 10. Nene Hawkins totaled 31 assists and seven digs in the loss. As a team, Bakersfield racked up 49 kills.
Solano Smith impressed in the first game, digging out a set-high eight balls to go along with a crucial assist that saved a Red Storm point. The Roadrunners opened the frame with a 7-4 lead over the Johnnies. A three-point run for the Red Storm, featuring back-to-back Stambrowska kills, evened out the score at 7-all. Both exchanged points until the Johnnies scored three straight, to take a 21-18 lead. Bakersfield contested the Johnnies at match point, scoring three straight points, but a Jones' fifth kill of the set put the frame away, 25-22.
In the second frame, Stambrowska contributed four of the Red Storm's 11 kills. Just like the first set, the Roadrunners ran out to a 7-3 lead, scoring five straight points off of Ava Palm serves. The Johnnies stormed right back, taking the next four points off a mix of an ace, a kill and errors, to tie the frame at 7-all. Both teams battled to 16 a piece until Bakersfield put together a 5-1 run to take a 21-17 lead. The Johnnies threatened, cutting their deficit down to one on match point, but a St. John's attack error finished off the set for the Roadrunners, 25-23.
Walther powered the Red Storm offense in the third game, recording 11 of the team's 17 slams. Jones served up five straight points to open the third frame for the Johnnies. Bakersfield put together a strong 10-5 run, which allowed them to creep back into the set and tie the Red Storm at 10-10. St. John's engineered a 6-2 run capped off by two powerful Walther slams to take a commanding 16-12 lead midway through the frame. The Johnnies rolled to the end of the set, putting together a 9-7 stretch that ended the third game, 25-19.
The Roadrunners were on fire out of the gate in the fourth set, establishing a 5-2 early lead. St. John's battled back using a mix of kills and Bakersfield errors to tie the match at 7-all. Tied at 13, the Roadrunners used four straight points to take a 17-14 lead over the Red Storm. The Johnnies made things interesting cutting the Roadrunner lead down to one, 19-18, but a 6-2 run for Bakersfield ended the set, 25-20, forcing a fifth frame.
Bakersfield opened the fifth game scoring four straight points, but the Red Storm countered right back, scoring five points of their own to take a 5-4 lead. Tied up at 14, Kowalczyk tipped over a critical kill, to take the set to match point. The Johnnies shut the match down with a Walther kill, taking the final set 16-14.
St. John's will open up its home slate on Tuesday evening when they take on UAlbany at 6 p.m. in Carnesecca Arena.
