Red Storm’s seven goals were the most in a game since 1998
The team's seven goals were the most in a game since the Red Storm held Providence scoreless, 8-0, on Sept. 18, 1998. The Johnnies racked up 24 points while ripping 13 of its 29 shots on target on Monday.
St. John's (4-1-1) saw seven different goal scorers and 10 players tallying at least one point. Miguel Diaz put forth a career day with his first Division I goal to go with a pair of helpers. Macoumba Ba, Nicolas Fleuriau Chateau, Brady Geho and Max McNulty all tallied one goal and an assist apiece. The foursome combined to tally more than half of the Johnnies' shots, posting 15 in total with Fleuriau Chateau ripping a team-best five of his own.
Eric Danquah and Jackson Gould also found themselves on the scoresheet, registering their first goal of the season. Antek Sienkiel nabbed a pair of assists against the Owls while Ignacio Antequera Sanchez and Justin Kopay recorded one helper of their own.
It took less than three minutes for the Johnnies to break the game open as McNulty bolted down the right side. The Birmingham, England native drove a cross toward the center and the ball ricocheted to the feet of Danquah, who netted his first with the Red Storm for a 1-0 lead.
Less than eight minutes later, the Johnnies drew a foul in the box and were rewarded with their third penalty kick in two games. Head Coach Dr. David Masur elected to send Ba to take his second in as many matches and the Louisville transfer knocked home a right-footed shot for a 2-0 edge.
The onslaught continued as St. John's continued to pester Temple (0-3-2) over the next five minutes, pressuring the Owls in their defensive third. Ba eventually pickpocketed an Owl defender in the 16th minute and led Ba into open space before tapping it over to Gould inside the box. The freshman rocketed his lone shot of the game through the hands of Temple's Flannan Riley and into the cage for a 3-0 lead.
Temple scored in the 19th minute, capitalizing on deflection and narrowing its deficit to two, 3-1.
In the 27th minute, St. John's leading point-getters connected for the Red Storm's fourth goal of the match. Fleuriau Chateau sliced through the Owls' defense from midfield into the box before slipping a pass to a sliding McNulty. The English striker roofed his shot at the far post for a 4-1 advantage, a lead the Red Storm took into the break.
Much like the first half, St. John's took no time to find the back of the net. In the 47th minute, Sienkiel and Geho connected on a cross in the middle before the latter found Diaz's feet on the right side of the box. The Brooklyn, N.Y., native blasted a one-timer towards the far post and in for a 5-1 lead.
Fleuriau Chateau scored his fourth of the season in the 52nd minute after a give-and-go exchange between Diaz and Kopay. With a lead pass into the box, Kopay threaded the needle with the Canadian forward at the back post, sending home the team's sixth tally, 6-1.
Just over 14 minutes later, St. John's punched home its final goal with a 66th-minute strike from Geho. Diaz swung a set piece to a streaking Antequera Sanchez at the left post. Using his head, the Granada, Spain native nudged the pass towards an open Geho at the top of the six-yard box, who lasered his shot into the top right corner for a 7-1 advantage.
The Johnnies utilized its bench over the final 24 minutes, having 26 players in total see action in Monday's contest.
St. John's will open BIG EAST play on Friday, heading to UConn for a 7 p.m. match at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium.
