Garziano tallied her sixth goal of the season
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's soccer team fell to No. 17 Georgetown on Thursday night in the BIG EAST opener, 3-1.
The Red Storm cut into the deficit late, but it was too much to overcome as it fell to 5-2-2 on the year and 0-1 in league play in the final leg of a four-game homestand at Belson Stadium.
Jessica Garziano scored the lone goal of the evening, her team-leading sixth of the season in the 79th minute. The graduate student fired a game-high three shots.
With her latest goal, the Long Island native has now moved into the top-five all-time in career points surpassing Lisa Anschwolar, who tallied 63 throughout her career. Garziano has now tallied 64 points (18 goals, 28 assists) while wearing a St. John's uniform.
Nicole Gordon and Isabelle Aviza tallied assists on Garziano's late-goal. Gordon now has now recorded three assists over her last two matches.
Shots were fairly even between the two sides with Georgetown holding a slight advantage, 10-8.
The Hoyas (5-3-1, 1-0-0 BIG EAST) wasted little time getting on the board after Allie Winstanley weaved her way past the defense and blasted one into the bottom corner to put the Hoyas in front, 1-0.
The Red Storm got its first threatening chance in the 20th minute, when a corner kick from Garziano curled its way toward the net but was knocked away by the goaltender Allie Augur.
In the final 10 minutes, the Red Storm began to turn up the heat, highlighted by a combination play as Aviza found Gordon, who one-touched it into the box but Garziano was unable to get there, as Augur came off her line to keep the Hoyas out of trouble.
The Hoyas fended off the Johnnies to go into the break ahead 1-0.
In the second half, a Georgetown corner bounced around the box before it fell to Natalie Means, who buried a grounder into the bottom corner and double its lead, 2-0.
The Hoyas continued to increase their lead after Emma Davis won a tackle and nudged the ball to Grace Sherman, who fired a strike from 30 yards out and sailed into the top of the net in the 70th minute.
Just nine minutes later, the Johnnies capitalized as Gordon popped one into the box. Aviza nudged the ball with the outside of her foot to a streaking Garziano, who beat Augur to the ball and punched it into the bottom corner of the net to make it 3-1.
In the closing moments, St. John's had another golden opportunity as Aviza's strike rung off the crossbar. The rebound bounced in the direction of Gordon but the senior was unable to steer it on frame in the 89th minute.
Coming up next, St. John's will travel to UConn on Sunday for a 1p.m. contest at Morrone Stadium in Storrs, Conn.
