St. John’s Heads to UConn for BIG EAST Road Match

Red Storm will face the Huskies on Sunday at 1 p.m.
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's soccer team will travel to UConn for its first BIG EAST road match on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
The Johnnies will play a road match for the first time in 20 days, following a four-game homestand at Belson Stadium. Sunday's contest will be streamed on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports with Adam Giardano on the call from Morrone Stadium.
In the BIG EAST opener, the Red Storm fell to No. 17 Georgetown on Thursday night, 3-1. St. John's holds a 5-2-2 mark on the year heading into the showdown with the Huskies.
Against the Hoyas, Jessica Garziano scored the lone goal of the evening, her team-leading sixth of the season in the 79th minute.
After becoming the program's all-time assists leader on Sunday, the graduate student added to her long list of accolades. The midfielder's goal in the BIG EAST opener propelled her into the top-5 all-time in career points (64).
Nicole Gordon logged an assist on Garziano's late-tally. The senior forward has been in form as of late, recording a goal and three assists over the last three matches. On the year, the Long Island native has posted two goals and four assists (8 points).
A relentless Red Storm attack remains in the conference lead in goals per game (2.0), assists per game (2.6) and points per game (6.6). The squad's helper mark per contest ranks 18th in the country.
Sunday's match-up marks a rematch of last year's BIG EAST Quarterfinals, where the Red Storm moved past the Huskies after advancing on penalty kicks, 4-2. The playoff tilt went to a penalty shootout after ending in a 1-1 draw through two overtimes. Isabelle Aviza provided the Red Storm goal.
In the regular season meeting in 2022, Aviza netted the game-winner in a 1-0 victory on Sept. 25, 2022.
The Huskies head into Sunday's game with a 4-2-2 record on the year. In its first match of league play, UConn defeated Creighton, 2-0. Joyce Ryder and Cara Jordan tallied goals in the winning effort in Storrs, Conn.
UConn's shutout on Thursday night marked its fifth in eight games. The Huskies backline has been stellar in 2023 posting a 0.50 goals against average.
Sunday's meeting marks the 28th all-time between the two conference foes.
