St. John’s to Host UConn and Providence to Open BIG EAST Play

Red Storm to host UConn and Providence to start BIG EAST play for the second consecutive season
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's volleyball team will kick off BIG EAST competition when it hosts UConn and Providence at Carnesecca Arena.
The Johnnies will open BIG EAST play on Friday at 7 p.m. when they take on UConn. On Saturday, Providence travels to Queens for a date with the Red Storm at 5 p.m. Both matches will be broadcast on ESPN+ with live stats available on RedStormSports.com.
Last year, the Johnnies started their BIG EAST slate 2-0, for the first time since 2012, taking down Providence and UConn.
The Red Storm and UConn will meet for the 31st time when they battle on Friday night. The Huskies leads the all-time series 18-12 and holds a 7-5 record at Carnesecca Arena. The last meeting between the two programs was in the first round of the 2022 BIG EAST Tournament, where UConn took down the Johnnies, 3-2. Lucrezia Lodi posted a career-high 24 kills paired with seven digs. St. John's took the first meeting in 2022 at Carnesecca Arena in five sets.
St. John's owns a 23-6 all-time advantage over Providence, leading into the two programs' 30th meeting. The last match between the two schools was on Sept. 23, 2022, exactly a year from their contest on Saturday. The Johnnies took down the Friars, 3-0, to kick off conference play, on the back of Lodi's fourth double-double of the 2022 season.
The Red Storm enters BIG EAST play after finishing their nonconference slate with an 8-4 record. The 2023 squad is coming off a 1-2 weekend at the Red Storm Invitational. The Johnnies opened the tournament by rallying back from a 2-0 deficit against Bryant to take the match in five sets. The program went on to drop their matches against No. 16 Arkansas and Buffalo, 3-1.
Eleonora Tosi was named to the Red Storm Invitational All-Tournament Team after putting up 29 kills and eight blocks across the weekend. On Friday night, Tosi posted a season-high 12 slams and five blocks against No. 16 Arkansas.
Erin Jones notched her fourth double-double of the season against the Razorbacks, which consisted of 17 kills and 14 digs. Jones now leads the Johnnies in points with 181.5 and total kills with 166. Jones' 3.53 kills per set is the fifth-best in the conference.
Jones and Giorgia Walther have found themselves in the national rankings. Jones' 166 slams rank 37th nationally while Walther is at 87th with 151. Jones has clocked in at 64th nationally in points while Walther is sitting 83rd with 174.
Wiktoria Kowalczyk moved into seventh in all-time career assists last weekend, moving past Lisa Tedder (2004-05). She is now 20 helpers away from tying Gabriela Petkova for sixth all-time. Kowalczyk's 444 assists are good for fourth in the BIG EAST and 23rd in the country.
The Huskies finished their nonconference slate with a 5-7 record after going 1-2 at the Dog Pound Invitational. Emma Werkmeister paces the Huskies in kills with 127 at 2.82 per set. Werkmister has also tallied 14 aces, 71 digs and 10 blocks in 2023.

Sammie Ruggles leads Providence in assists, posting 243 total helpers to go along with a conference-high 27 aces.
