St. John’s Falls to No. 13/14 UConn at UBS Arena

ELMONT, N.Y.– The St. John's women's basketball team fell to No. 13/14 UConn on Saturday afternoon on UBS Arena, 92-49.
The Huskies shot 64.4 percent (38-59) from the floor at the home of the New York Islanders to move to 14-3 overall and 6-0 in BIG EAST play.
The Red Storm went on a 12-2 run to conclude the first quarter to trim the deficit to just six, 24-18 but the Huskies took control to start the second frame and never looked back.

UConn's Paige Bueckers led all players with 22 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the floor. The Huskies had five in double-figures and finished with 28 assists on 38 made field goals.
UConn started out in commanding fashion making five of its first six 3-point attempts to jump out to a 22-6 lead. After Owen halted the run with a driving lay-up that St. John's offense kicked into gear. Donald followed it up by a burying a triple then Mayo sunk a floater to cut the defecit back to single-digits. In the final play of the first frame, Mayo utilized a screen from Phoenix Gedeon to free her from the defender and pulled up from the top of the key for a triple as time expire. The 3-pointer finished off a 12-2 scoring stretch for the Red Storm over the final 2:58 of the first to make it a six-point game, 24-18, after 10 minutes.
The Huskies came out firing in the second quarter and engineered a 13-0 spurt to take a sizeable advantage, 37-18. Gedeon brought the run to a half after flushing a mid-range jumper. UConn took a 44-25 lead into the locker room.
In the latter half, UConn continued to control and grow its lead. Donald hit a pair of 3-pointers and Unique Drake scored the final points of the quarter, cashing in on a long two-pointer to make it 74-39 heading into the fourth.
The freshman made an impact in the final quarter as Jayda Brown sunk a couple of jumpers and ended with six points on the day. Nevaeh Wingate recorded a season-high two steals and the Red Storm forced the Huskies into 15 turnovers at UBS Arena.
The Red Storm will be back in action against Butler on Jan. 17 at Carnesecca Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
