Daniss Jenkins scored a team-high 17 points in an 80-65 setback to the Pirates at the Prudential Center
NEWARK, N.J. – The St. John's men's basketball team (12-6, 4-3) dropped an 80-65 decision to local BIG EAST rival Seton Hall (13-5, 6-1) on Tuesday at the Prudential Center.
Al-Amir Dawes led the Pirates with a game-high 21 points. The senior guard drained three 3-pointers and shot 8-for-9 at the free-throw line. Dylan Addae-Wusu added a double-double with a 16-point, 10-rebound effort, while Elijah Hutchins-Everett (14), Kadary Richmond (12) and Dre Davis (10) also scored double figures for the Pirates.
St. John's graduate student Daniss Jenkins led the Johnnies with 17 points and five assists. Sophomore forward Zuby Ejiofor scored a career-high 13 points, shooting 5-for-6 from the field in 21 minutes off the bench.
Seton Hall outrebounded the Red Storm, 49-28, and pulled down 21 offensive boards. The Pirates also scored 17 points on second-chance opportunities.
The Pirates took the early advantage by scoring the first six points and opened a 13-2 lead by the 13:29 mark on a pair of free-throws by Davis. St. John's countered with a 10-0 run by hitting six of its next nine field goal attempts. Chris Ledlum scored six points during the spurt before Jenkins buried a jumper at the top of the key to pull within 13-12 with 9:13 to go in the first half.
For the next five minutes, it remained a one possession game with Jenkins burying a pair of 3-pointers to tie the game a 19 apiece at 5:49 and then 24 all at 4:33. However, the Red Storm went cold the rest of the half as Seton Hall closed the frame with the final 14 points to take a 38-24 lead into the break.
The Pirates carried the momentum into the second half by scoring the first 14 points of the stanza to open a 28 point lead before Glenn Taylor Jr. buried a 3-pointer for St. John's with 16:03 to play.
St. John's trimmed its deficit to 15 by the final horn, thanks in part to an energized effort from Ejiofor who scored nine of his 13 points in the final 11 minutes of action. Drissa Traore gave the Red Storm good minutes off the bench and finished with four points.
The Red Storm will return to action on Saturday when it takes on No. 17/18 Marquette at Madison Square Garden. FOX will carry the national broadcast from Midtown with tip-off scheduled for 12 p.m.
