Women tied for second while the men placed fifth

QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's and women's fencing hosted the annual St. John's Invitational Saturday inside of Taffner Fieldhouse.

The event included 32 of the last 33 national champions as the Red Storm competed against the likes of Columbia, Harvard, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Penn State.

The men's team finished in fifth as they competed to a 1-4 record with a win over Penn State.

Ahmed Ferjani racked up 14 individual wins with just one loss in the men's saber. He has now totaled 30 individual wins in two competitions this season. Jan Jurkiewicz tallied 11 victories in the men's foil and Adam Horvath finished with 9 triumphs in the men's epee.

On the women's side, the Red Storm tied for second as they battled to a 3-2 record with wins over Notre Dame, Ohio State and Penn State. St. John's dominated in the women's saber competing to a 32-13 record on the day.

Julia Cieslar and Catinca Dumitru each contributed 11 individual wins in the women's saber category. Malwina Kolodziejczyk led the way for the Red Storm in the women's foil with a dazzling mark of 11-4. Freshman Nicole Feigin notched 9 victories in the women's epee.

The Red Storm will return to action as a team tomorrow when they travel to The City of Brotherly Love to compete in the Philadelphia Invite.
