St. John's junior Carl Gustavsson has been named BIG EAST Singles Player of the Week, as announced by the conference on Monday.
Gustavsson went 4-0 in singles play this past week, helping the Red Storm win three of its first four dual-matches of the 2024 season.
This marks the second BIG EAST weekly honor for the Stockholm, Sweden native, who last was awarded the honor on Feb. 6, 2023.
Gustavsson opened his 2024 season last Tuesday by helping the Johnnies to a 6-1 win over Bryant, defeating Diego Serra Sparrow on the No. 3 singles court, 6-1, 6-1.
The next day, the reigning First Team All-BIG EAST Selection put on another dominate performance, taking down Quinnipiac's Shaurya Sood, 6-1, 6-3. The Johnnies swept the Bobcats, 7-0, for their second straight win to start the season.
Win number three for both Gustavsson and the Red Storm came on Thursday as St. John's blanked LIU, 7-0. The junior played on the No. 1 singles court for the first time this season and emerged victorious over Philip Hilble, 6-3, 6-4.
Against Cornell on Sunday, Gustavsson picked up the lone point of the day for the Johnnies, beating Bradley Paliska, 6-3, 6-4.
In addition to his success on the singles court, Gustavsson posted a productive opening week of doubles play, winning three matches over the team's first four contests.
Gustavsson and St. John's will return to action with a pair of matches this week. On Thursday, Feb. 1, the Red Storm will take on Marist at 1 p.m. at the USTA National Tennis Center before making the trip to The Boss Tennis Center in Hannover, N.H. on Sunday for an 11 a.m. matchup with Dartmouth.
