St. John’s Beats Rider, 6-1, to Open 2024

Red Storm improve to 1-0 with the win
The St. John's women's tennis team beat Rider, 6-1, in its season opener on Wednesday afternoon at the USTA National Tennis Center.
The Red Storm (1-0) have now won its home opener in all nine seasons under Head Coach Lauren Leo.
The Johnnies won the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead before dominating their singles slate, winning five of the six individual contests, to clinch the season-opening victory.
On the No. 1 courts, 2023 Second Team All-BIG EAST Selection Mouna Bouzgarrou and Arina Gumerova defeated Laila Fishman and Jett Coetzee, 6-4. On the No. 2 doubles court, Alicia Gómez and Noemi Babikova each picked up their first dual-match victory in a St. John's uniform, blanking Avery Oppenheim and Elle Catazarite, 6-0.
The Red Storm continued its strong start in singles play. Nicoline Sartz-Lunde made the score 2-0 in favor of the Johnnies after beating Coetzee in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2. The win marked the first dual-match victory in Sartz-Lunde's colligate career.
On the No. 3 court, Gómez took care of business against Daniela Naves Anzaldo, 6-0, 6-4.
Armed with a 3-0 lead, Gumerova picked up the 4th point for the Johnnies after a convincing 6-1, 6-1 decision over Angnese Ceccarelli on the No. 2 singles court
On the No. 1 singles court, Bouzgarrou earned her second victory of the day, taking down Fishman, 6-3, 6-1, giving the home team a 5-0 lead.
The advantage was pushed to six after Babikova picked up the first singles victory of her dual match career in a decisive 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Oppenheim.
With the loss, Rider falls to 0-4 to start its season.
The Red Storm will be back in action on Friday to take on UMass. First serve from the Bay Road Tennis Center in Amherst, Mass. is scheduled for 1 p.m.
