Red Storm will host Marist on Friday and visit UMass on Sunday
The St. John's women's tennis team will host Marist on Friday at 12 p.m. in the USTA National Tennis Center before traveling to Amherst, Mass. for a 1 p.m. match with UMass on Sunday.
The Red Storm (1-0) opened its season on Wednesday by taking down Rider, 6-1, in the first matchup between the two programs.
The Johnnies and the Red Foxes last met on Jan. 27, 2023, when St. John's defeated Marist in convincing fashion, 7-0, in Queens. Current graduate students Mouna Bouzgarrou and Willa Bay Breunich each picked up a straight-set singles wins for the Red Storm. Breunich also teamed up with fellow graduate student, Camila Ordonez, to help the Johnnies claim the match's doubles point.
Marist arrives to Queens after dropping its first four matches of the year. The Red Foxes have just one point on the season. They opened their season by dropping a pair of matches to Columbia, 7-0, 4-0, on Jan. 19 before getting swept by NJIT on Jan. 26. In its home opener last Sunday, Marist fell 6-1 to Fordham.
Sunday's match will be the 10th contest between the St. John's and UMass. The last time the schools faced off, the Red Storm emerged with a 5-2 win, its largest margin of victory in the series history. Ordonez, a freshman at the time, claimed the fifth point of the day for the Johnnies after a three-set comeback victory on the No. 6 singles court.
UMass currently stands at 1-1 after losing to Boston College, 5-2, in its opener last Saturday before sweeping Providence on the road, 7-0, on Sunday. Prior to its Sunday matchup with the Johnnies, UMass will play host to Quinnipiac on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Following this pair of contests this weekend, the Red Storm will have five days off before hosting FDU at the USTA National Tennis Center on Feb. 9.
