St. John’s to Host Providence on Wednesday at MSG

Red Storm and Friars square off at 6:30 p.m. on FS1
QUEENS, N.Y. – Riding a three-game win streak, the St. John's men's basketball team (11-4, 3-1 BIG EAST) returns to action on Wednesday when the Johnnies host Providence (11-4, 2-2 BIG EAST) at Madison Square Garden. Tip-off from "The World's Most Famous Arena" is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
FS1 will carry the national telecast with Alex Faust and Donny Marshall on the call from Midtown. An audio broadcast of the game on the LEARFIELD Red Storm Sports Network with John Minko and Vin Parise will also be available on a variety of platforms including the Varsity Network App, TuneIn Radio, RedStormSports.com and the St. John's Red Storm mobile app. The radio broadcast can also be heard on SiriusXM channel 380 and the SiriusXM App.
The St. John's Athletic Department and New York City-based Local Hoops, in conjunction with CLC, the nation's leading collegiate licensing company, will be releasing a special merchandise collection beginning on Wednesday at the fan shops inside Madison Square Garden. The new line created through a collaboration between St. John's and Local Hoops features a variety of co-branded "New York City Basketball" products, merging the Johnnies' basketball roots in NYC with the community-oriented organization's brand identity. The special collection features a range of products, including sweatshirts, t-shirts and hats. The collection will also be available to purchase online on Wednesday and at the St. John's University campus store.
On the court, St. John's has won five of its last six contests and returns to Madison Square Garden for the first of six BIG EAST home games at "The World's Most Famous Arena." The Johnnies have won six-straight home games and carry a 7-1 mark on its home court into Wednesday's contest with the Friars.
In its last matchup at MSG, Joel Soriano helped lead St. John's to a 77-55 victory over Fordham on Dec. 16 in the Holiday Festival. The 6-foot-11 center recorded 20 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks versus the Rams.
Off to its best start in BIG EAST play in over a decade, St. John's is coming off a 10-point win over Villanova on Saturday at Finneran Pavilion. Soriano paced the team with 20 points and eight rebounds, while Daniss Jenkins (18) and Brady Dunlap (15) also finished with double figures in the scoring column. Jenkins recorded five assists and three rebounds to help guide St. John's past Villanova for the first time in the last seven tries.
On Monday, Jenkins and Dunlap were recognized for their efforts during the Red Storm's recent three-game win streak by earning a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. Jenkins averaged 18.7 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.7 steals in three starts. The 6-foot-4 guard also dished out 6.7 assists and posted an impressive +5.0 assist-to-turnover ratio. Dunlap delivered a pair of breakout performances in wins over Butler and Villanova, as the 6-foot-7 forward averaged 14.0 points, shooting 66.7 percent (10-15 FG) with six 3-pointers.

Original members of the BIG EAST, the Johnnies and Friars will square off for the 123rd time in a series that began in 1927. Last season, St. John's rallied for a 73-68 victory over then-No. 20/17 Providence on Feb. 11, 2023 at Madison Square Garden. Soriano registered a double-double, finishing with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
Providence enters Wednesday's contest looking for its first win since Dec. 23. The Friars have dropped their last two contests, including a 69-60 setback on Saturday at Creighton. Junior guard Devin Carter paced the team with 25 points and 10 rebounds against the Bluejays.
Carter leads the Friars averaging 16.9 points per game this season. The 6-foot-3 guard from Miami also leads the BIG EAST and ranks 15th in Division I averaging 7.2 defensive rebounds per game. As a team, Providence is 22nd in the nation with 29.2 defensive rebounds per contest.
