Erin Jones hammered a match-high 13 kills
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's volleyball team was downed by No. 6 Creighton in straight sets, 3-0, on Saturday evening inside Carnesecca Arena. The scores of the sets were 18-25, 10-25, 20-25.
Erin Jones led the way offensively for St. John's (13-7, 2-4 BIG EAST), posting a match-high 13 kills with four digs, three assists, two blocks and an ace. The junior currently leads St. John's with 337 points and 284 kills.
Lucrezia Lodi paced the Red Storm with three blocks to go along with nine kills at a 33.3 percent hitting rate and six digs. Barbara Costa dos Santos registered a season-high three digs.
Wiktoria Kowalczyk recorded a team-high 25 helpers and dug out five balls. The senior has led the Red Storm in assists in 19 of its 20 matches this season.
Rashanny Solano Smith rang up a team-high seven digs and notched three assists.
After the opening frame started with a 3-3 tie, Creighton (15-2, 6-0 BIG EAST) went on a 10-4 run, taking an early 13-7 lead. Both teams traded points as the Bluejays held onto their six-point advantage, 17-11, until St. John's cut it down to four, 18-14, with a 3-1 spurt. Creighton didn't blink, as it used a final 7-4 stretch to take the opening set, 25-18. Jones fired off five kills in the first stanza.
The Bluejays erupted for an 8-2 lead at the beginning of the second frame, forcing both of the Red Storm's timeouts. Creighton continued to expand its advantage to 11, 16-5, with an 8-3 run that capitalized on four Johnnie errors. The Bluejays cruised through the rest of the set, taking a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-10 set two victory. Jones tacked on another four slams in the stanza.
St. John's staked an initial 5-1 lead at the start of the third game, but Creighton used a 3-1 spurt to cut its deficit down to two, 6-4. The Johnnies found their groove again as they went back up by five, 10-5, from a 4-1 rally. The Bluejays went on to register three consecutive points, cutting the Red Storm edge back down to two, 10-8. Tied at 15, Creighton sparked a 7-3 run to go ahead, 22-18, using its momentum to take the final set and the match, 25-20. Jones and Lodi each recorded four kills apiece in the final set.
St. John's will hit the road for a pair of matches next weekend against Providence and UConn on Oct. 18 and Oct. 19, respectively.
