Jones logged 14 assists, 11 digs and 10 kills for her third triple-double of the season
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The St. John's volleyball team sunk Providence in straight sets, 3-0, inside Alumni Hall on Friday night. The Red Storm earned set victories of 25-23, 27-25 and 25-20 over the Friars.
"Terrific and gritty BIG EAST road win for our squad tonight," said Head Coach Joanne Persico. "We made critical plays in crucial moments, which is what it takes to win conference matches."
Erin Jones dazzled all over the court for St. John's (14-7, 3-4 BIG EAST), logging her third triple-double of the season on 14 assists, 11 digs and 10 kills. The junior also tallied three aces against the Friars.
Lucrezia Lodi notched her second consecutive and third double-double of the season inside Alumni Hall. The standout registered 12 digs and 11 kills to go along with two service aces. Giorgia Walther tacked on 10 slams at a 29.2 hitting percentage.
Wiktoria Kowalczyk led the Red Storm with 18 assists paired with five digs. Rashanny Solano Smith quarterbacked the Red Storm's defense, registering 11 digs and four helpers in the match. Sujeili Mermella dug out another five balls in the win.
Magda Stambrowska secured five kills and two blocks. In her first career start, Kya Harris totaled three kills and a block assist. Ludovica Zola held down the middle of the net, adding two digs, a kill and an rejection.
As a team, the Johnnies paced the match with 49 digs, 42 kills and 39 assists against Providence (7-11, 0-7 BIG EAST).
The first set broke out to an 8-8 stalemate as Jones and Lodi combined for five kills in the opening stretch. Providence went on to score four straight points to lead, 12-8, forcing a Red Storm timeout. The two teams went point-for-point until St. John's sparked a 6-2 stretch that featured two kills apiece from Walther and Jones, knotting the frame up at 16. Even at 23 late in the stanza, the Johnnies used a Walther kill with a Harris and Stambrowska block assist to win the set, 25-23. Jones, Lodi and Walther each tallied four slams in the set.
After exchanging points to an initial 8-8 tie in the second game, the Friars took advantage of back-to-back Red Storm errors to lead, 10-8. St. John's responded with a 10-2 run on the back of four kills and two aces from Lodi to go ahead by six, 18-12. Providence threw a counterpunch at the Johnnies with a 9-5 rally, cutting its deficit down to two, 23-21. The Friars evened things to force consecutive Red Storm's set point, 25-25. Kills from Walther and Jones capped off the second frame in the Johnnies' favor, 27-25. Lodi rained down seven kills in the second set.
The Red Storm jumped out to an initial 8-4 advantage in the third stanza after capitalizing on four consecutive Friar errors. St. John's grew its advantage to nine, 17-8, from a 9-4 scoring stretch that saw four slams between Jones, Walther and Harris. Following an 11-5 run for Providence that cut the Red Storm lead down to three, 22-19, the Johnnies used a decisive 3-1 rally to claim the final set and the match, 25-20.
St. John's will take on UConn tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. at the UConn Volleyball Center in Storrs, Conn. The match will air on SNY and live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
