Campo de Quevedo is the first BIG EAST Cross Country Athlete of the Week in program history
NEW YORK – After taking home the individual title at the Metropolitan Championships, Leyre Campo de Quevedo was named the BIG EAST Female Cross Country Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced on Tuesday.
The honor marks the first time in program history that a Red Storm student-athlete was named the BIG EAST Female Cross Country Athlete of the Week.
Campo de Quevedo continued her stellar freshman season last Saturday when she was named the Individual Champion of the Metropolitan Championships. The standout paced the 5K race in a personal record 17:45.7.
The Spain native is the first St. John's runner to win the Metropolitan Championship since Antonia Howard posted an 18:27.0 mark at Van Cortlandt Park in 2016.
The freshman has been nothing short of remarkable for the Red Storm, leading St. John's in all three meets so far this season. She posted a mark of 19:17.8 for 23rd at the Br. John "Paddy" Doyle Meet of Champions to kick off the season. Campo de Quevedo followed up her performance with a 22:05.7 6K finishing time at the Paul Short Run, two weeks later.
Campo de Quevedo and the Red Storm will return to action on Friday when the squad takes part in the ECAC Championship at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y.
