Red Storm were picked to finish fourth in the BIG EAST Preseason poll
NEW YORK– St. John's women's basketball point guard Ber'Nyah Mayo has been named to the Preseason all-BIG EAST Team, the conference office announced ahead of the league's annual media day at Madison Square Garden.
In the BIG EAST Preseason poll, the Red Storm were picked to finish fourth in the conference, its highest preseason ranking since 2020. St. John's finished third in the league last year with an 11-7 league record, marking the eighth top-five conference finish in 12 years under Head Coach Joe Tartamella.
Mayo made a major impact as the 2023-24 season went on in her first-year in Queens after transferring in from UMass. The Wilmington, Del., native started 32 of 33 contests at the point guard position and averaged 10.9 points per game. The guard ranked top-10 in the BIG EAST in assists per game (10th at 3.5), steals per game (10th at 1.7) and assist-to-turnover ratio (7th at 1.9).
Mayo padded the stat sheet all season long, becoming the first player to tally over 300 points, 100 rebounds, 100 assists and 50 steals in a single season since the program's all-time leading scorer Aliyyah Handford in 2015-16.
The point guard played an integral role in St. John's turnaround last season, logging 20 double-figure scoring efforts, including 17 over the final 20 contests. Mayo logged seven outings with five or more assists and back-to-back games with five steals.
During the Johnnies' postseason run in the inaugural Women's Basketball Invitation Tournament (WBIT), Mayo averaged 14.5 points and 5.5 assists per game as the squad advanced to the second round.
Over the course of her four-year collegiate career, Mayo has tallied 75 double-figure scoring performances and accumulated 1,336 points. She was an All-Atlantic 10 Second Team selection and the conference tournament MVP during her final year at UMass in 2022-23.
The graduate student becomes the seventh-straight St. John's player to be recognized by the league preseason, dating back to 2017.
The Johnnies accumulated 67 points in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' poll to match its highest prediction in four years. UConn, Creighton and Providence were selected ahead of the Red Storm.
BIG EAST Women's Basketball Media Day will be streamed live on Peacock from The World's Most Famous Arena beginning at 12:30 p.m. ET.
