The Red Storm and Bulldogs to meet for 15th time in program history
QUEENS, N.Y. – Fresh off its comeback victory over Villanova, the St. John's men's soccer team (3-4-3, 1-1-0 BIG EAST) will head west to visit Butler (3-5-2, 0-2-0 BIG EAST) at Bud and Jackie Sellick Bowl on Friday.
Kick-off from Indianapolis is slated for 7 p.m. Friday's match will be streamed on FloFC and live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
The Johnnies captured a 2-1 win over Villanova behind a three-point effort from Martin Kozak on Saturday. The Chilean striker helped set up Tyler Morck for the equalizer in the 65th minute before cashing in on a feed from Jackson Gould 3:46 later for the game-winner. Miguel Diaz also produced a pair of assists in the contest.
Head Coach Dr. David Masur became the seventh men's soccer head coach to secure 400 total wins with a singular NCAA Division I program when the Red Storm utilized a second-half surge to down Villanova on Saturday. In his 34th season at the helm of the program, Masur is only the second active Division I head coach to accomplish the feat, joining Maryland's Sasho Cirovski (434).
Morck, who has started in back-to-back games, will look to make it three straight games with a goal scored. The Bethpage, N.Y., native found the back of the net against both Penn State (Sept. 24) and Villanova (Sept. 28).
St. John's, which is in its 46th season as a program, is one win away from reaching the 500-win plateau. The team is sitting at 499 victories. The Red Storm will look to become the second founding member to reach the 500-win threshold in men's soccer since the BIG EAST's inception in 1979, joining UConn with 578 wins over that span.
Saturday's matchup will mark the 15th all-time meeting between the Johnnies and Bulldogs with the Red Storm holding a 8-4-2 advantage in the series. St. John's will square off with Butler for the first time since the 2022 campaign after the conference added Akron and split the 12-team league into two divisions. The Johnnies will look to secure its first road win over the Bulldogs since Sept. 28, 2019, leaning on a game-winning strike from Tani Oluwaseyi in the 35th minute to earn a 1-0 victory.
Butler (3-5-2) is looking to snap a four-match skid despite playing stiff competition in No. 12 Ohio State, Akron, Wright State and Marquette.
The Bulldogs are top-three in the BIG EAST with 17 goals (3rd), 19 assists (2nd) and 53 points (3rd). As a team, Butler is averaging 14.7 shots (28th in Division I) and 1.9 helpers per game (38th).
Josemir Gomez (6) and Ryan Hannosh (5) are also ranked second and third in the conference in goals scored, respectively, producing 64.7 percent of the team's scoring. Gomez is also tied for 21st in the nation with his strikes, while Hannosh is tied for 37th. The duo has also produced 13 points each on the season, good for 33rd in the country.
St. John's will return to Queens for another non-conference matchup, taking on Loyola (Md.) on Tuesday. The match from Belson Stadium is slated for 7 p.m. The Johnnies will look for its first win against the Greyhounds when the two teams square off for the seventh time.
