The Red Storm won seven total matches over three days of competition
THE BRONX, N.Y. – The St. John's women's tennis team continued its fall schedule this weekend, winning seven matches at the Fordham Fall Invitational.
The Johnnies were in The Bronx from Friday through Sunday, competing against student-athletes from Fordham, NJIT, Army, Stonehill, Hofstra, Yale, FDU and Stony Brook.
The athletes were divided into nine singles brackets and five doubles draws, with each draw serving as its own eight-person tournament.
Doubles partners Noemi Babikova and Giulia Bizzari led the way for the Red Storm, winning three total matches each. After dropping the first contest of doubles play in Draw BB, the St. John's duo rallied to win the group's consolation competition, defeating Stonehill's Lilah Shallcross and Annelise Beltran before taking down Aya Mastunaga and Lilianna Chitambar from Fordham in the consolation championship.
In Draw B singles action, Babikova earned her third victory of the weekend with a 6-1, 6-1 performance over Stonehill's Julie Holte. Bizzari's singles triumph came in Draw D consolation play, downing Paige Herremans from Army, 8-4.
Charlotta Buss also impressed for the Red Storm, winning two matches in Draw C to advance to the bracket's championship. The Flagler transfer took down Hofstra's Amanda Kadiri in the opening round, 6-2, 6-2 and survived a three-set thriller over Lilianna Chitambar of Fordham to reach the finals, 6-4, 4-6, 10-3.
Victoria Papadopoulou picked up a singles victory in Draw A action, handling FDU's Namie Isago in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. The full results from the weekend are below.
The Red Storm will continue its fall slate on Oct. 10-15 at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Regionals, hosted by UPenn in Philadelphia.
