RJ Luis Jr. recorded his third 20-point, double-double leading the Red Storm men’s basketball team with 24 points and 10 rebounds on Saturday at Carnesecca Arena
QUEENS, N.Y. – RJ Luis Jr. and Kadary Richmond combined for 42 points to help lead the RV/RV St. John's men's basketball team (6-2) to a 77-64 victory over Harvard (2-6) inside Carnesecca Arena on Saturday.
Luis logged his third 20-point, double-double of the season, posting a game-high 24 points shooting 50 percent (9-18 FG) from the field to go with 10 boards. The junior wing also registered four assists in 33 minutes of action.
Kadary Richmond chipped in 18 points on an 8-for-14 shooting effort from the floor. The 6-foot-6 guard also recorded eight boards, four assists and a trio of blocks against the Crimson. Fellow guard Simeon Wilcher also reached double figures with 12 points, three boards and a pair of steals.
Red Storm freshman Jaiden Glover produced a season-high 11 points, all coming in the first half. The Brooklyn native drained a trio of 3-pointers while dishing out three assists.
The Johnnies scored 42 of their 77 points in the paint and scored 20 second-chance points. The Red Storm also pulled down 50 rebounds in Saturday's triumph, the most since recording 51 against Sacred Heart on Dec. 6, 2023.
St. John's quickly jumped out to a 14-6 lead and never looked back as Luis recorded nine of the team's first 14 points through the eight minutes of action. Zuby Ejiofor pushed the Red Storm's advantage to double digits with consecutive finishes at the rim before Glover knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to go up, 24-8, with less than eight minutes to play in the opening half. Glover and Luis Jr. finished the opening frame with 11 points apiece.
Harvard cut the Johnnies' lead to as few as seven, 33-26, as Tay Barbour hit his second 3-pointer of the half at 1:55 and Chandler Pigge drained a pair from the charity stripe 22 seconds later. Pigge finished with a team-high 15 points to go with seven boards and five assists.
The Red Storm's Glover beat the halftime buzzer with a contested 3-pointer from the wing to put the Johnnies ahead, 40-28, at the end of intermission. The freshman guard finished the half with 11 points, logging three of his four makes from distance.
St. John's opened its largest lead of the game, 46-28, with a 6-0 spurt that featured consecutive finishes at the rim by Ejiofor, Wilcher and Richmond.
Harvard trimmed its deficit down to as few as eight, 63-58, as Louis Lesmond sank a triple, followed by a midrange jumper from Robert Hinton with 5:40 remaining. The Crimson duo, as well as Evan Nelson, all finished with 11 points apiece.
