St. John’s shoots season-best 57.6 percent from the field in win over Hoyas; Jordan Dingle leads Red Storm with 22 points
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The St. John's men's basketball team (15-12, 7-9) shot a season-high 57.6 percent from the field while Jordan Dingle poured in 22 points to help lift the Red Storm to a 90-85 victory at Georgetown (8-18, 1-14) on Wednesday.
Dingle shot 8-for-13 from the field and buried three 3-pointers in his season-high scoring performance. The Valley Stream, N.Y., native also recorded four rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals.
Red Storm sophomore RJ Luis Jr. scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half, shooting 9-for-15 from the field while pulling down six rebounds. Daniss Jenkins chipped in 15 points, including a clutch jumper with 1:02 remaining to help seal the victory. The Dallas native also dished out five assists and grabbed three rebounds.
St. John's forward Chris Ledlum added 12 points, four rebounds and three blocks on Wednesday. Joel Soriano blocked three shots and registered his 13th double-double of the season with a 10-point, 10-board performance.
The Red Storm dominated inside the arc, knocking down 62.7 percent (27-43 FG) of its shots and scoring 42 of its 90 points in the paint.
St. John's got off to a hot start hitting 15 of first 21 shots and took a 35-14 lead just over seven minutes into the contest. Dingle knocked down his first four shots, scoring the team's first nine points through the first four minutes of action. After Soriano started and ended a 9-0 run with finishes at the rim, Jenkins found his rhythm shortly after. The graduate guard sank back-to-back triples before a Zuby Ejiofor layup closed out a 10-0 stretch and gave St. John's a 21-point cushion at the 7:14 mark.
Georgetown chipped away at the lead outscoring the Johnnies 18-4 over the final seven minutes of the first half. Rowan Brumbaugh drained two 3-pointers, Jayden Epps sank a triple of his own before Drew Fielder completed a three-point play to bring the Hoyas within seven, 39-32, at the break.
Much like the first half, Dingle scored seven of the team's first 10 points in the second frame and knocked down his third triple to put St. John's up 49-39 with 15:28 to play.
St. John's quickly built its lead to 17 after Luis made back-to-back layups within 23 seconds before Simeon Wilcher stole the ensuing inbound pass and finished at the rim. The Plainfield, N.J., native scored seven points in as many minutes off the bench, closing out the 9-0 run with a 3-pointer from the corner to put St. John's up 58-41 with 13:03 to go.
Epps kept the Hoyas close until the final horn, as the sophomore guard scored 21 of his game-high 31 points in the latter stanza. The Illinois transfer scored five-straight points in a span of 10 seconds to get Georgetown within four with 1:31 to play.
Jenkins answered for the Red Storm on the next possession with a clutch mid-range jumper to push the advantage back to six with 1:02 on the clock. After Bristol retaliated with a 3-pointer at the other end to get Georgetown within three, 84-81, Luis put the game away with a breakaway dunk 19 seconds later. Soriano and Dingle closed out the contest each with a pair of free throws to secure the five-point victory.
The Red Storm will return to Madison Square Garden on Sunday to host No. 15/15 Creighton at 12 p.m. St. John's will hold a whiteout for the matchup as part of the University's second-annual Johnnies Day celebration.
