After their win the last time out against Providence, the Johnnies earned a first round bye in the BIG EAST Tournament and secured a top-five finish in league play for the ninth time in 12 seasons under Head Coach Joe Tartamella. St. John's (16-13, 10-7 BIG EAST) can still earn as high as a three seed in the conference tournament with a win over Marquette and a Villanova loss in one of its two remaining games against UConn and DePaul.
In the Senior Day victory over Providence, 60-42, the Red Storm held the Friars to just 14 first half points, the lowest total by a BIG EAST opponent since 2022. Ber'Nyah Mayo notched her 11th double-digit scoring performance over the last 13 games finishing with 11 points and added six assists and three steals. Over the last four outings, the point guard is recording 4.3 swipes per game.
The Red Storm finished the season with an 11-3 record at home went 10-2 in games played inside the friendly confines of Carnesecca Arena.
In the earlier meeting between the two squads, St. John's knocked off then-20/19 Marquette, 57-56 fueled behind a 24-point performance from Unique Drake. A closely contested game between the two saw 14 ties and seven lead changes as the Johnnies erased an eight-point third quarter deficit to earn a marquee ranked win on Jan. 3.
The Golden Eagles enter the contest having won five of their last six games. Marquette holds a 21-6 record on the year and a 10-6 mark in league play.
Marquette boasts a high-powered offense ranking 11th in NCAA Division in assists per game (19.2) and 10th in 3-point field goal percentage (38.0). Liza Karlen leads the team averaging 18.0 points and 7.9 boards per game.
