Johnnies drop game on the road to the Highlanders
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The St. John's softball team (5-9) fell to UC Riverside (4-9) by the score of 3-2 at Amy S. Harrison Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Anese Thompson launched her team-leading third home run of the season during the fourth inning of the contest.
Starting pitcher Carolina Zamudio threw six innings, surrendering three unearned runs while tallying two strikeouts.
Cassidy Stouffer and Elanna Lysiak chipped in a hit apiece for the Red Storm.
The Highlanders struck first in the bottom of the opening frame, scoring two after a pair of walks and a St. John's miscue. A double-steal play led by Lauren Garewal stealing second allowed Rebeca Cabezas to steal home and give UC Riverside the 3-0 advantage.
After a scoreless top of the second, UCR's Kat Montuya hit a two-out double into left field to give the Highlanders another runner in scoring position. Nadia Witt then lined a ball into left that looked as if it would score the run, but Sydney Totarsky made a full-extension diving catch to end the frame and keep the lead at three.
St. John's Zamudio and UC Riverside's Emma Falen exchanged blank half-innings in the third.
Stouffer led off the fourth pulling a single down the third-base line before advancing to second on a Highlander's error. Thompson followed by launching a two-run home run over the left field wall to shrink the UCR lead to just one, 3-2.
A pitcher's duel ensued with Zamudio settling in and tossing her fifth consecutive scoreless frame in the bottom of the sixth. Highlander's reliever Maddie Heinlin came in and delivered a blank fifth and sixth to keep the score at 3-2 into the seventh.
Despite a late two-out spark by Lysiak singling between short and third, Heinlin retired the final batter to secure the 3-2 win for UC Riverside in the top of the seventh.
St. John's will be back in action at the Lancers Invite against California Baptist, Cal Poly and Idaho State. The tournament is scheduled to take place from Friday to Sunday and will conclude the Red Storm's West Coast trip.
