St. John’s Completes Opening Day at BIG EAST Match Play

Thomas Stafford, Jack Breutsch and Peicheng Chen all tally wins at Bear Lakes Country Club
WEST PALM BEACH Fla. – The St. John's men's golf team opened its spring 2024 campaign on Monday afternoon at the BIG EAST Match Play.
The Red Storm played a pair of matches at Bear Lakes Country Club in West Palm Beach, Fla. against top-seeded Creighton and fourth-seeded Butler.
In the first match against the Bluejays, five of the seven matches came down to the final hole but Creighton ultimately took the win, 5-2. 2023 All-BIG EAST selection Peicheng Chen after firing five birdies on the back nine to go up five holes and close the match out after the 14th hole. Thomas Stafford and Thomas Finn each tied their matches, respectively.
In the afternoon contest, the Johnnies took on Butler and dropped that contest, 5-2. Stafford impressed once again cruising in his match against the Bulldogs' Jack Wilcox. The junior captured a three-hole victory closing out the competition with two holes to play. Jack Breutsch was the other Red Storm player to tally a win against Butler. The freshman from Center Moriches, N.Y. outshot his opponent Kenny Leseur in last two holes to claim a two-hole win to finish out the day.
The St. John's men's golf team will play its third and final match from Bear Lakes against Villanova tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m. Live results will be available on GolfStat.
