St. John’s Takes Down CBU, 9-2, After Dropping Game to Cal Poly

The Red Storm drops California Baptist for second consecutive day behind two home runs
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The St. John's softball team (7-10) split a pair of games against Cal Poly (9-8) and California Baptist (7-10) on Friday. The Red Storm fell to the Mustangs, 6-4, before taking down the Lancers, 9-2.
The Johnnies launched three combined home runs between the two games and scored a season-high nine runs versus California Baptist.
Sophomore Loreley Francia pitched a combined 10.2 innings between the two games including a complete game win against California Baptist. The Spring, Texas native surrendered just three earned runs and tallied eight strikeouts in the two contests. Francia now has a team-leading four wins and 3.09 ERA in 43.2 innings of work this year.
London Jarrard had a terrific day at the dish, notching three extra-base hits including a team-leading fourth home run in the opening contest with Cal Poly. The shortstop finished with a combined seven RBIs to bring her total to 18 in 2024.
Catcher Katie Whittaker launched her first home run of the season in game two. The San Marcos, Calif. native helped the Johnnies take the lead against CBU in game two with a two-run round-tripper in the fourth.
Cassidy Stouffer mashed her third career home run in game two with a three-run home run in the fifth inning against the Lancers to help blow the game open for the Johnnies
Game 1
Starter Carolina Zamudio set the tone early for St. John's in the top of the first. The junior snagged a hard comebacker before striking out a pair to leave the inning, 0-0.
Jess Bianco started the home half with a walk and was brought home on an RBI double by Jarrard to left-center to take the early lead, 1-0. The Red Storm offense found themselves with runners on second and third after a Stouffer walk and Elanna Lysiak sacrifice bunt. However, Cal Poly's Kate Judy recorded the final two outs to leave the score at 1-0.
Cal Poly responded in the top of the second, loading the bases on a single, fielder's choice and walk. Juju Sargent then delivered a double to center field to give the Mustangs the advantage, 2-1. A walk later, Xiara Diaz hit a sacrifice fly into center to extend the Cal Poly lead to 3-1.
The contest continued to go back and forth in the bottom of the second. Sydney Totarsky was hit by a pitch followed by Bianco reaching on an error to put a pair on with two outs. Jarrard delivered once again for St. John's, drilling a three-run home run into right field to give the Johnnies the lead, 4-3.
After a blank third, the Mustangs loaded up the bases once again with a trio of base hits with one out in the fourth. Kiara Blanched helped Cal Poly retake the lead, slapping a two-run single into left field, 5-4. In relief, Francia found her way out of the frame, recording the final two outs to hold the Mustangs lead to just one.
Sabrina Seaton sliced a one-out double into right-center to give the Red Storm offense a scoring opportunity in the bottom of the fourth. Totarsky followed with a single up the middle to put runners on the corners. Mustang's reliever Paige Maier battled back to get the final two outs and hold the lead at 5-4.
Francia and Meir went back and forth, exchanging scoreless half-innings of relief to keep the score at 5-4 in the advantage of Cal Poly after six.
The Mustangs tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh Mia Perez walked to open the inning and advanced to second on a ground out. Kenny Litana then hit a single through the right side to grow the Cal Poly lead, 6-4.
Cal Poly's lead proved to be too much for the Red Storm in the bottom half as the Mustangs claimed the 6-4 win.
Game 2
After a scoreless inning and a half, the Lancers put one on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second. Valerie Alvarez drilled a one-out triple to center field ahead of Matti Severns bringing her into score on a slap single to left, 1-0.
Back-to-back singles by Amy Mallah and Madison Wallace gave the Red Storm a golden opportunity to answer in the top of the third. An out later, Bianco chopped a high infield single to load the bases. However, California Baptist's Morgan McConnell was able to generate a line-out double play to preserve the 1-0 lead.
Francia settled back in during the bottom of the third, keeping CBU off the board and the score at 1-0.
With one out in the fourth, Seaton drove a double into right-center to put another runner in scoring position for St. John's. Whittaker delivered for the second day against the Lancers with a two-out two-run home run to dead center to provide the Johnnies with the 2-1 advantage.
The Red Storm offense continued to stay hot in the fifth after Francia recorded a blank bottom of the fourth. Totarsky singled through the left side and reached second on a Bianco walk to put two on and one out. With two outs, Stouffer launched the second Red Storm home run in as many innings with a three-run shot to left field to extend the St. John's lead to 5-1.
California Baptist chipped into the lead during the home half of the fifth. Three consecutive singles from Priscilla Estrada, Merrissa Borkowski and Kayla Lyons loaded the bases with one out. A Kalena Burns ground out allowed one to score, but that was all Francia allowed by retiring the third out a preserving the three-run lead, 5-2.
St. John's kept swinging into the top of the sixth. A lead-off Whittaker walk, Mallah single and Wallace sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third with one out. An out later, Bianco drew a walk to keep the inning going for Jarrard who pulled a bases-clearing double into right-center, giving the Johnnies an 8-2 lead.
The Johnnies tacked on one more insurance run in the top of the seventh after Whittaker walked and Mallah ripped her third base hit of the contest down the left-field line to put two on. Wallace sent an RBI single up the middle to make the score, 9-2.
Francia completed the game in the bottom of the seventh, striking out all three Lancers to seal the 9-2 victory for St. John's.
St. John's will wrap up its trip to California and the Lancers Invite on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET against the Idaho State Bengals.
