QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's point guard Daniss Jenkins has been named to the 2023-24 All-BIG EAST Second Team, as announced by the conference on Sunday.
Â
Jenkins shined for St. John's during the regular season, starting all 31 contests in his lone season with the Johnnies. The 6-foot-4 guard led the team averaging 14.7 points per game and shot career-bests 44.7 percent from the field and 83.7 percent at the free-throw line. Jenkins also dished out 5.5 assists per game, which ranks third in the BIG EAST and 31st in Division I. He also finished the regular season sixth in the league with a 2.2 assist-to-turnover ratio and seventh averaging 1.5 steals per contest.
Â
Jenkins elevated his play in BIG EAST action, averaging 16.1 points per contest while ranking 10th in the league with a 47.1 field goal percentage and he shot 40.0 percent from distance. Jenkins also ranked among the conference leaders in assists (5.1 apg, 4th), assist-to-turnover ratio (2.0 a-to, 6th), steals (1.4 spg, 12th), 3-point field goals made (2.0 per game, 12th) in conference play.
Â
The graduate student from Dallas scored double figures in 25 of 31 regular season games, which includes five 20-plus point efforts. One of Jenkins' top performances of the season came in an 80-66 victory over then-No. 15 Creighton on Feb. 25 at Madison Square Garden. He led the Red Storm with a season-high 27 points, shooting 12-for-18 from the field, to go with six assists, two blocks and two steals in the victory over the nationally ranked Bluejays.
Â
A four-time BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll selection, Jenkins has been one of the top ball distributors in the nation this season. He has dished out eight or more assists eight times during the regular season, including a season-best nine assists with only one turnover in the team's 23-point victory at Butler on Feb. 28. Jenkins' 170 assists are the 29th-most in the country this season and he is just two shy of breaking into the top-10 on the program's single-season assists list.
Â
Jenkins has helped lead the Red Storm to a fifth-place finish in the BIG EAST this season. The team's 11 conference victories are the most for St. John's since winning 12 BIG EAST games during the 2010-11 season.
Â
Fifth-seeded St. John's (19-12, 11-9) will open the 2024 BIG EAST Tournament against fourth-seeded Seton Hall (20-11, 13-7) on Thursday at Madison Square Garden. Tip-off for the quarterfinal matchup is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. FS1 will carry the national telecast.
