Munson becomes the first Red Storm player to win a major weekly award since 2016
NEW YORK – Following the St. John's lacrosse team's 13-6 victory over Binghamton on Saturday, goaltender Kyle Munson was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week while Bobby Seel was tabbed to the Weekly Honor Roll, the conference announced on Monday.
The Red Storm netminder made a season-best 15 saves on 21 shots faced against the Bearcats on Saturday. The redshirt junior finished with a 71.4 save percentage, which sets a new St. John's career-best. Saturday also marked the ninth game since the start of 2023 in which Munson had a save percentage over 50 percent. The six goals Munson allowed against Binghamton are the fewest the Red Storm has given up in a game since defeating Dartmouth, 12-5, on March 17, 2018.
The Merrick, N.Y., product is the first Red Storm player to earn a major BIG EAST Weekly award since Eric DeJohn was named the conference's offensive player of the week on April 25, 2016.
Seel solidified his first career appearance on the conference's weekly honor roll after his career-high six-point performance against Binghamton. The junior tallied four goals and added a pair of helpers, all in the second half, propelling the Johnnies to their second win of the year.
Through eight games this season, Seel's 15 goals are tied for the team lead and his 23 points are already a career-best just eight games into the season. The junior extended his team-best point and goal streaks to nine games on Saturday.
The Red Storm have now had four BIG EAST players recognized by the conference this season. Junior Brian Kelly and redshirt-freshman Adrian Nowak were each previously tabbed to the Honor Roll.
The Red Storm will look for its third win in its last four games this Saturday when it travels to Philadelphia to take on Saint Joseph's. Faceoff from Sean Sweeney field is set for noon and the game will be streamed on ESPN+.
