Red Storm picks up its second consecutive victory
The St. John's women's tennis team won its second match in a row, defeating Monmouth, 5-1, on Friday afternoon at the USTA National Tennis Center.
The Red Storm (5-4) won two-of-three doubles matches to claim the team point and earned victories in four-of-five singles matches to close out the Hawks for the second consecutive season.
In doubles play, Arina Gumerova and Alicia Gomez made quick work of Lana Brezanin and Madison Mills, earning a 6-0 decision on the No. 1 court. Mouna Bouzgarrou and Nicoline Sartz-Lunde picked up their third win as a pair on the No. 2 court to clinch the team doubles point, defeating Nitika Girish and Hana McKinney, 6-3.
In singles play, Bouzgarrou gave the Red Storm a 2-0 lead on the No. 1 court, taking down Brezanin in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. With the win, Bouzgarrou picked up her fourth victory of the year in the No. 1 singles position.
On the No. 2 court, Gumerova earned the third point of the day for the Johnnies with a two-set decision over Girish, 6-2, 6-0. Freshman Noemi Babikova made it 4-0 in favor of St. John's with her fourth win of the season on the No. 5 court, taking care of business against Lauren Landstrom, 6-1, 6-3.
Sartz-Lunde gave the Red Storm its fifth point on the No. 3 court, getting the better of McKinney, 6-3, 6-2.
Monmouth falls to 1-8 with the loss.
The Red Storm will return to action on Sunday when it travels to Providence, R.I., to face Brown. First serve is set for 12 p.m.
