The Wappinger Falls, N.Y., native struck out career-high 10 batters in seven shutout innings against Winthrop
QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's right-hander Xavier Kolhosser secured BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week honors for the second-straight week after helping the Johnnies to a 6-0 shutout against Winthrop, as announced by the league on Monday. Second baseman Anthony Brienza also landed on the conference's honor roll after a stellar doubleheader performance on Saturday.
The Wappinger Falls, N.Y., native dismantled Winthrop's lineup in the Red Storm's 6-0 victory on neutral grounds on Friday. The righty allowed just three hits and struck out a career-best 10 Eagles across seven innings of work. Kolhosser also threw just 80 pitches, 59 of which went for strikes.
Kolhosser did not allow a walk in his second shutout in as many appearances, marking the third time this season he has logged no free bases in an outing. He was perfect in his final three innings of work against Winthrop, inducing nine outs on 31 pitches to close his day. The Johnnies' ace also struck out the final batter of the frame in five of his seven innings of action.
The 6-foot-5 hurler has been dominant all season with a 6-1 mark and a 2.90 ERA through seven starts. He is one of eight pitchers in Division I to log six or more wins this season. Kolhosser's 40.1 frames of work also put him in elite company, becoming one of four strike-throwers in the nation with more than 40 innings pitched and at least six victories.
Brienza put forth one of the most impressive days at the dish in Saturday's doubleheader against the Eagles. The Johnnies' second baseman opened the day with a 3-for-5 showing, logging a career-high five RBIs and three runs scored in the Red Storm's 18-4 win. Brienza also smacked his first collegiate home run and became the first Johnnie to log two triples in a game since teammate Jackson Tucker posted two against Seton Hall last season.
The Marlboro, N.J., native finished off the day with the biggest knock of the afternoon and preserved the Red Storm's unbeaten record at Jack Kaiser Stadium. Down to the final out and trailing by two in the seventh inning, Brienza ripped his third triple of the day into the right-center gap, bringing in two runs and lifting the Red Storm to an eventual 6-6 tie.
