PALM BEACH, Fla. – Fueled by impressive days from Thomas Finn and Peicheng Chen, the St. John's men's golf team sits in second place after shooting 8-under on the opening day of the Southern Invitational.
The Red Storm shot a season-low 8-under, 276, in the opening round, the team's lowest single-round score to par since it shot 9-under in the second round of the 2023 BIG EAST Championships. The Johnnies are 16 strokes ahead of third place Binghamton and sit five shots behind the clubhouse leaders Florida Atlantic.
As a team, St. John's recorded a 4.87 stroke average and shot 4-under on the par-5's at the Falls Club. The Red Storm accumulated 31 birdies during its first 36 holes in Palm Beach, Fla.
After winning the individual title at the event last year, Chen struck once again at the Falls Club turning in consecutive rounds of 3-under, 68, to card a 6-under, 136, and take sole possession of second place through 36 holes. The junior fired in nine birdie putts and recorded an eagle on the par-5 eighth hole in the opening round.
Finn went for a season-low, 6-under, 65, in today's opening the lowest score by a St. John's player since Chen shot a 64 in the first round at the MacDonald Cup on Sept. 24, 2022. After bogeying the first hole of the day, the freshman standout ripped off seven birdies and didn't log another bogey for the remainder of the round. The Locust Valley, N.Y., native carded a 2-over, 73, over the latter round of the day and checks in tied for third place on the leaderboard.
David Mlynek also logged a strong day for the squad logging back-to-back rounds of even par, 71. The sophomore finished with five birdies and a team-high 26 pars and sits tied for ninth place.
The Red Storm will tee off for the final round of the Southern Invitational tomorrow morning. Live results will be available on GolfStat.
