NEW YORK (April 1, 2024) – Following the St. John's lacrosse team's 13-9 victory over Marquette on Saturday, attackman Brian Kelly has been named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week and netminder Kyle Munson was named to the weekly honor roll, the conference announced on Monday.
Kelly scored four goals and added an assist in the Red Storm's comeback win against the Golden Eagles. With the Johnnies trailing 5-0 in the first quarter, the junior scored three straight to ignite the St. John's offense and spark the team's biggest comeback since 2019.
Saturday was the third time this season Kelly recorded at least five points in a game. In the Red Storm's four wins this season, Kelly has 11 goals and 7 assists. The Red Hook, N.Y., product has four straight multi-point games and has tallied at least one point in 10 straight appearances. With his five points on Saturday, Kelly has 128 for his career, good for sole possession of ninth place on the program's all-time points list.
This is the second weekly honor for Kelly this season. He was previously tabbed to the honor roll on Feb. 19 after recording 10 total points against Hofstra and No. 16/16 Richmond.
Munson made 13 saves against Marquette to earn his spot on the weekly honor roll for the second straight week. The former BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week held the Golden Eagles to four goals over the last 49:28 of game time on Saturday. Munson has recorded double-digit saves in five straight games and has five games this season with a save percentage of at least 50 percent.
This is the third BIG EAST weekly award for the redshirt junior this season and the fourth of his St. John's career.
The Red Storm has eight weekly honors from the conference this season. Bobby Seel, Adrian Nowak and Dane Armstrong have all been previously tabbed to the honor roll.
St. John's will look for its third straight victory on Friday when it travels west to face No. 10/8 Denver. Faceoff from Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium is set for 6 p.m MT (8 p.m. ET).
