NEW YORK – Ryota Kaneda and Adam Groves have been named the BIG EAST Doubles Team of the Week while Ignacio Vinas was tabbed Singles Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.
Kaneda and Groves went 2-0 in doubles play last week, helping the Red Storm to victories over No. 75 Monmouth and Villanova. In the Johnnies' 4-3 win over the Hawks on Wednesday, the duo took down Gabriel Busato and Christof Zeiler, 6-1. On Saturday, the pair defeated Villanova's Josh Vestal and Lukas Choi, 6-1, in the Red Storm's 7-0 win over the Wildcats. Kaneda and Groves have won four matches in a row as a duo.
Vinas also won a pair of matches for the Red Storm over the past week. With Wednesday's match against Monmouth tied at 3-3, Vinas earned a come-from-behind victory over Gabriel Burner, 1-6, 6-3, 7-5, to pick up the match-clinching fourth point for the Johnnies. The junior continued his strong play against Villanova, earning a victory against Thomas Wakefield, 6-1, 6-3, helping the Red Storm to its fifth-straight sweep over the Wildcats.
St. John's has won five weekly awards from the BIG EAST this season. Leonardo Mileikowsky and Carl Gustavsson were previously tabbed Singles Player of the Week while Vinas and Leon Petko were named the conference's Doubles Team of the Week on Feb. 5.
The Johnnies have won four of their last five matches and are a perfect 2-0 in BIG EAST Play. The Red Storm will return to action on Wednesday to face NJIT. First serve from the St. John's Outdoor Courts is set for 12 p.m.
